Question Canon 600D vs. Canon 60D

Hi,

I was originally at looking into buying a 600D off Amazon for 400 (New, I think) and I was going to buy it in February and now my brother (Who works in Television and in the Media environment) suggested the 60D, apparently it's "one up from the 600D" apparently it's a lot better but obviously a bit more expensive...

Can anyone shed some light on the situation, is the 60D a better option? - Some of the main things I liked about the 600D was the flip-out screen, 18.8mp and the 1080p video...

I know I could of googled some of this stuff, but I'd prefer to ask here and get some first hand answers from real people who might have owned or once worked with both cameras...

Re: Canon 600D vs. Canon 60D

Hi

I have a 650D and that does the job for me. I did have the 50D before - which is the predecessor to the 60D.

The main differences are as far as I can tell. The 60D will probably have a faster ( slightly ) burst rate on shooting continuous RAWs. Probably more ISO stops ( eg my 650 goes 100,200,400,800 ) when my 50 went 100,120,160,200 etc).

Also probably a higher max shutter speed. 1/8000 over 1/4000.

I find I don't miss them and can make do with going for a slightly slower burst rate for action shots ( though if action (sports) is your main interest then maybe look to a 7D as that is better.

I'd recommend going for the either the 650d or the latest 700d which is slightly better ( has the same Digic 5 processor as my 650d ) (more advanced than both the 600 and 60d in fact).

As I noticed it was around 480 online at Wex for example.

Think that would be a great starting camera - with HD movies, flip out screen, good resolution etc.

Better to spend extra dosh on good glass.

Re: Canon 600D vs. Canon 60D

I have just purchased a 600d as a mess around camera. Its a bit plastic but does the job. I wanted to mess around with magic lantern software on it and just to see how I got on with the software before commiting to a more expensive body.
Magic lantern is great!

Whatever camera you buy is a personal thing and only by reading reviews and handling a few in the shops can you find out what you want from your camera and what your budget is.
My next body I am going to buy online from a Hong kong dealer I have used before and save a fortune. I know some people will say it is wrong but I had Jessops vouchers before they went bump and lost a few quid so Hong kong for me

Re: Canon 600D vs. Canon 60D

I got a 600D some time back as a "back-up" for my 40D and found that the 40D got little used with the much better handling of noise and higher iso settings. The SD card use made life easier having the slots on my Macs, but this last week the spring has gone on the 600D card slot, so perhaps the loss in build quality may have shown. I am seriously looking at the 70D or 700D as at times taking large groups, the rotating screen has proved very useful. The results from the 600D have been excellent in all conditions and have not missed the burst speed at all.

Re: Canon 600D vs. Canon 60D

thanks for all the messages folks, A student on my photohraphy course at college has the 60D and another one has the 600D, I found this out today anyway, it's quite good and useful as I'm deciding between the two, the 60D is slightly heavier but in a good way, I feel like the 600D feels kind of like a toy, it's quite light which to me would represent a lack of durability...

The 60D Shoot rate seems faster which would be better in many circumstances, Yes it would be most beneficial for sport, but the problem is, at 17 I'm not 100% on what my area is if that makes sense, I like portrait, landscape, still life, vehicle and abstract, I've not yet experienced sport photography so I might like that too...

It seems like the 60D is better than the 600D from what I've managed to see online, does anyone know if the 60D has any major flaws?

(I used this site to compare the 600D Vs. 60D and as you can see the 60D won)

Re: Canon 600D vs. Canon 60D

Best way is to actually handle the cameras and you are fortunate to find two of your friends with both of these models. I'm not aware of any issues with the 60D, but the Canon owners will soon say so if there are.

Re: Canon 600D vs. Canon 60D

If speed is important the 650D is as fast as the 60D ( which is not as when quick compared to other more expensive cameras). It is probably similar to handle as the 600D.

I find the lighter weight helpful, but that's also as I have recent neck injury - so I prefer the weight.

As above people have said - good to try them out and you have people that have them, so that's a good thing.

The other thing - maybe look for second hand 60D, 600, 650 or 7D - not sure what they go for ?

I have a huge 64g SD card which I keep in camera on the 650 - and just USB straight to windows. I've had my 650 since June last year. So far ok. My 50D lasted about 4 years before shutter button got sticky. Still works but sometimes you have to hold the button down, I've relegated it to when I want to shoot on remote control.

Thanks, It's true that two people on my course have these models, there not exactly friends unfortunately, their a little mardy about people touching their stuff as it seems, I think I'm going to find a camera store near me and go in and handle the two and see what the store guy says, after handling the 60D for a couple minutes it does seem better than the 600D to be honest, but that's to be expected for 100 odd more I guess, a lot of things are important, and speed might be one of them, as I said I haven't found "my place" in photography if you know what I mean, so I'm leaning towards the 60D for the fact that it's got the speed, cause it's good to have the extra if I do love sports photography... I've always wanted to do some racing photography so it'd be good for that I expect...

Another question, what do people have to say about buying camera from eBay? and further buying camera from the far east such as Hong Kong, Japan, China... usually that'd put me off, but Canon is Japanese after all...?

You can get good deals on e-bay. There are several decent places in Hong Kong. I've used One stop Digital several times. However, any warranty work would have to be done where it was bought, so factor this in. Rob Barron bought his 40D from One Stop in Hong Kong and had to return it due to a fault. He had the replacement camera in his hand in under a week IIRC.

Several decent places in the UK for used kit too and you will get a warranty unlike a private sale.

Re: Canon 600D vs. Canon 60D

Yeah I've seen a couple of decent deals on eBay around the 500 mark which isn't too bad, I've seen a great deal on Gumtree, usually seen as unreliable but the good thing is you can see the deal/product first hand before handing over any cash... so that's all good...

One stop looks good too, looking at 550 on there too, so it's just deciding where to buy from once I'm 100% sure which camera I want

I've used digitalRev for buying lenses, items always arrive in less than a week normally delivered 3-4 days and guaranteed no import duties. Prices are excellent too

Like the rebel as they call it over here, but you can't beat the manual control over white balance which I use only on the 60D.
