Canon EOS 450 or Nikon D80 for macro
Question is simple. For macrophotography: Canon EOS 450D+Canon EF 100mm f2.8 USM Macro Lens or Nikon D80+Nikon 105mm f2.8 G AF-S VR IF ED Micro Nikkor Lens? Just tell me what do you think. Canon is cheaper and thats the only reason i'm thinking about it.

Re: Canon EOS 450 or Nikon D80 for macro
Either will be good - sorry that's not much help, but it's true.
Choose the camera that feels better. Also remember the third party macro lenses - Sigma 105 and 150. The latter is very good if you want to be a little further away, although it is rather heavy.Personally I'd go 450D + Canon 100mm, but that's partly because I've got other Canon kit. |

Re: Canon EOS 450 or Nikon D80 for macro
With VR on the Nikon I reckoned on it being a done deal (how many times have I wanted those extra stops when handholding macro?) and I've always been surprised that Sigma don't do an OS (their version of VR/IS) macro. But apparently there's little/no benefit at 1:1 on the VR (true for all macro applications on all makes, I wonder, hence no Sigma/Canon?)
So, got to agree with Silky that either would be good. Personally, I like Nikon and would probably go that way if I was to start from scratch - and there is some benefit to be had from that VR lens! ![]()

I think that you should handle both cameras and then go for the one that feels better in your hands. Check on how the settings are selected and adjusted - one of them will be easier for you and that is the one to go for.

Re: Canon EOS 450 or Nikon D80 for macro
it's starting to be interesting - so one more question - best macro lens for Canon or Nikon. Price could be around £500 for that lens (nikon 105mm is for £489). o, and i'm not lazy - i was already looking for macro lenses. i'm asking because maybe someone is using something and know how it works.
i was trying those cameras - i like Nikon when it comes to handle it but... if i could buy something cheaper and with same quality i'll survive. Last edited by marcinklysewicz : 10-03-2008 at 17:26. |

![]() OK, so I've only used the Sigma 105mm (on Sigma and Canons) but I find it more than adequate and up to the task (see Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro f/2.8 - Example / Sample shots / photos ). Concensus seems to be that Canon 100mm and Sigma 105mm have pretty much equal quality with the Canon having the better build. Don't know the Nikon lens |

Re: Canon EOS 450 or Nikon D80 for macro
If it is any help thjere are two pictures in my gallery taken with the Canon 100 mm macro lens. The "robin" which was hand held and the "drive head" which was tripod mounted. You can see the rest of the info in the exif data. That lens cost me about £250 from Ebay. American import but already in the UK so no customs problems etc. Both images are more or less straight from the camera with only a little cropping (from my memory).

Re: Canon EOS 450 or Nikon D80 for macro
I doubt there will be much difference in price between a 450D+100 and a D80+105 at the time the 450D is launched.
I have owned the canon lens and tried the nikon lens and I can quite safely say I would rather have the nikon. I used my 100 for portraits and other general stuff with great results so, with vr, you get an added bonus. Finally, the Nikon lens is very sexy and coupled with the D80 is a drop dead gorgeous combination. |

Re: Canon EOS 450 or Nikon D80 for macro
Once you at that level of camera gear and are comparing similar equipment I can assure you that its not the camera that makes the difference but the photographer....could you better utilise the £100 elsewhere perhaps, software, storage, filters, bag, money towards more lenses or a flashgun etc.?

This is an interesting place for looking at various lens options Nikon Lens: Primes - Nikon 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S VR Micro Nikkor (Tested) - SLRgear.com! I must have 105vr shaped hands as I did feel more comfortable with it. The differences in final quality between Canon and Nikon will almost certainly be insignificant. Let me know what you choose! |

Re: Canon EOS 450 or Nikon D80 for macro
i just found out that Nikon D80+Nikon 105mm f2.8 G AF-S VR IF ED Micro Nikkor Lens will cost me around £811. for almost same price i could buy Canon 40D+Canon EF 100mm f2.8 USM Macro Lens (about £824).
i'm starting to feel creazy. i'm going to order one of them next month. |
