Compact chioce

Been thinking of using a compact for a few shots instead of wasting my D90 & lugging it around when a compact might do if you know what i mean any suggestions as to what a decent one would be, 10-12 mil pixels would be fine

Re: Compact chioce

SIMPBOW, I DON'T KNOW WHAT BUDGET YOU HAVE IN MIND FOR A COMPACT, BUT I WOULD CONSIDER EITHER A CANON G11,G12 OR THE LATEST G15. I HAVE A G10, WHICH IS EXCELLENT, I AM VERY PLEASED WITH IT, BUT I AM SURE THERE HAVE BEEN IMPROVEMENTS MADE IN THE LATER MODELS.

Re: Compact chioce

I think it boils down to if you consider a viewfinder essential or not. If you do, there are a few high end compacts - Nikon, Canon and I think that maybe Sony do one too. But the price is high.

If a VF is not high on the wish list there are some other models around. Panasonic do a nice wide angle lens - about 25mm eqivalent.

My biggest regret with my Sony HX9 is it hasn't got a viewfinder but there again those with viewfinders don't have the powerful zooms.

Re: Compact chioce

Shane, I like my Canon G10 for its viewfinder and manual controls, but it's quite big for a 'compact', and tbh I don't use it much.

My Samsung ST550, on the other hand, is fantastic! It's small enough to put in your pocket, robust, 12MP, huge 3.5" touchscreen LCD, additional front 1.5" LCD for self-portraits (just tap to activate), 5x optical zoom, takes great video, and excellent quality photo's. No viewfinder, which I don't find a problem. It's a magic little camera, a real pleasure to use ~ I use mine a lot and can thoroughly recommend it

Here's one on Amazon for £200, check out the reviews :

Re: Compact chioce

When I looked, my shortlist of requirements included RAW, essential controls (MF, exp comp, etc), macro capability and VF and so ended up with a G11 which has suited my every need brilliantly. But find I never use the VF and almost always use the articulating LCD.

Youngest is off to Borneo (part of Uni course) and wanted to take underwater pics, so she's now got the G11 with an underwater housing.

I've been looking at suitable replacements and rejected the G15 (no articulating LCD) and the G1X (no macro capability) - although both improve on the G11 (the G1X massively). So I've ended up with a G12 which is a slight improvement on the G11 (relatively minor, but significant to me, tweaks) - then when she breaks the G11 we can use the underwater housing!

Re: Compact chioce

Shane, the choice is mind boggling. Best approach is to narrow it down by deciding what features you want, and then search for models with just those features. Good luck, and let us know what you get

Re: Compact chioce

Been away for a few weeks in India, Its nice to be back home watching the rain! Just logged on I was looking for a decent compact for about six months! but I got it down to just two....the Canon G1X and the
Nikon P7700 my dealer said that the Canon was slightly better and has a viewfinder the Nikon has just the brightscreen monitor but for a hundred pounds more for the Canon it should be! however because I have always been a Nikon user I chose a Nikon P7700 which at the time was selling at a reduced price of £389 with a 2GB card thrown in! I used it for a week before I went to India just to try it out and all seemed ok, I used it quite a lot in India and I was well pleased with it, quite often I left my D800 in the safe and just went out with the compact, it made me feel like a proper tourist! (which I am) I set the ISO at 200 and used it in A/P the results were good. Now there is another Nikon compact out with a detachable viewfinder which slots into the flash shoe, I have not seen it yet though! As somebody as already said take your time in choosing theres a lot to choose from!

Re: Compact chioce

Thanx for the info Des,as you say take your time, going to have to now as ive just bought Nikon D70 again in the box with all present with only 2k clicks had planned on a compact but couldn't miss this[being used for back-up & IR until i get it IR converted] didn't want to spend a lot of money on a compact so narrowed it down to 4 Samsung EX-1,Olympus XZ-1,Panasonic LX-3 & Canon S90 to S100,all with RAW as thats what i want to have as well, any comeback from anyone on these 4

Great buy! I've still got my D70s. Don't use it much/at all, but can't bear to part with it.

Nice one simpbow! I dont know why I ever sold mine, It was great using my longer lens on the D70, I bought it as my first DSLR and it came with a standard zoom 18-70mm Nikkor that lens was very good and I only got rid of the outfit when I went FX! a couple of years ago.

Shane, my Samsung ST550 does it by tapping on the touchscreen, and works very well too You just tap on the area you want to focus on (e.g. a face), and it obliges

Re: Compact chioce

On the Canon G12 it has MF and needs to be set (as AF is set to continuous) and then adjusted. Have to say it's a total POS - takes ages to do and the fungi has usually dies of old age by the time it's done! But the focus point can me moved anywhere in the FOV and that works brilliantly!

My mobile (Samsung Galaxy) uses a touchscreen and, as Charlotte, all I do is touch where I want focus. Works OK

Re: Compact chioce

Hi simpbow, I helped a buddy make is mind up for a power shot bout 3 years ago. He let me take it for a ride and the first thing I did was take some auto Iso shooting in low light. Very good pictures. So it helped in seeing where canon was improving. I use a first generation no view finder DLUX 3,,,Leica. It has switches on the out side 3:4,2:3 and 9:16 aspic ratio for pictures. Switches for macro and normal shooting. It also has been a great movie taker, light skinny and cool looking. But it's getting old and I still like it. You can find the same camera under lumix by panasonic with the Leica lenses. Very easy and fast swivel button to toggle the manual setting like I have for focus on my slrs. When it gives out i will buy another one, but the lumix brand for the price, although I got a find deal on the Leica I couldn't pass up. I found no problems not having a view finder.
