Re: D2X RIP but what should I do for a replacement?

Very early quick impressions. It is of course familiar controls have been tweaked mostly for the better eg focus mode BKT. IQ is slightly better than D2x or D200, noise is a good bit better at high ISO.

Live view is a mixed blessing, the tripod AF mode is very very slow to focus so would really only be usable as it suggests on a tripod. However the handheld mode works better than I thought since the angle of view of the (truly lovely) screen is excellent so overhead or low angle shots are really possible although I have yet to confirm this in bright light. I have not had a chance to stretch focusing so no idea how well that performs. Maybe tomorrow at the big cat seminar.
Elsewhere it has been suggested that it overexposes slightly or is less sensitive. That looks to me to be the evaluative algorithm. If I use spot metering it agrees with the D200 and my handheld meter. It does seem to get it spot on from my limited playing.
I am pleased with it so far, well I would be because it came in a shiny box.

Now I really have to go and try and get it all set up.

Re: D2X RIP but what should I do for a replacement?

Well in tems of photography it was pretty dismal very very dark but for what I wanted really useful. Focusing is impressive and the results are very good indeed for the conditions much better than I would have obtained with a D2X or D200. Every one else was struggling, resorting to flash or giving up and it was hard not to be smug.
