D2X RIP but what should I do for a replacement?

Just had a phone call from a good friend who was very upset. He had borrowed my D2x as a third body for the US Grand Prix. Short version he dropped it from a great height and broke it - a lot - (along with his 200 2.0)
Now, even if the insurance falls out of bed he is good for a new D2xs and has already offered to replace it out there and bring it back so I am not worried; I more feel sorry for him as he is so apologetic.

BUT

Then I got to thinking. I have the D200 which I am using more and more especially travelling. I have an old D2Hs which is still OK if I need 2 bodies. I am in the Dales and Peak district next week but was only planning on taking the D200. I have nothing major planned before Christmas where I would miss the D2 but definitely want it for then (3 weeks in Africa)

So do I just get the D2Xs which is an upgrade for me anyway or do I wait in the hope Nikon release a (non full frame) replacement before December?

I think you should go for it, not entirely sure why, but I think you'll miss it if you do, and that is a long time to wait...

Well I think you should wait, as you've said you've nothing really on until Christmas that you'd need it for and you have a 2nd body if something comes up, so what's the rush?... just sit on the cash you get as replacement and wait and see what Nikon do this winter

I think you've answered the question yourself by saying how much you use the D200 these days . Keep the money & wait, or otherwise buy another D200 for 2nd body & pocket the difference

Re: D2X RIP but what should I do for a replacement?

I think there will be a replacement for the D200 out before Christmas - maybe a D300? This will make the D200 cheaper, and the D300 might be a better bet when it is released.

Re: D2X RIP but what should I do for a replacement?

VinnyP:

At this point we're still around two to three months away from Nikon announcing the D2X/s sucessor, and probably another one to two months post-announcement before we see such a camera showing up on store shelves.

If you feel that you can get by for about five months in total with your D200 and D2Hs, then I'd say wait it out a bit - otherwise get a second D200 and put the difference aside for something else.

Re: D2X RIP but what should I do for a replacement?

One thing I won't do is get a second D200, amazing camera that it is; when things are moving the D2X's focusing is much much better even more so if you use any AF sensors other than the centre one. I'd miss that when I need it.

The D200 is still a good way ahead of Canon at this price point. The D2Xs is struggling against Canon and only die hard enthusiasts claim the Nikon has the edge. I think Nikon must be desperate to get a replacement out. But the rumour is it will be FF or near enough. That wouldn't be the one for me. I hope they have a 1.5x in the wings as well.

Re: D2X RIP but what should I do for a replacement?

be suprised if there was a d300,. there's no need, nikon doesn't need a d300 the d200 is selling very well and there's not much that comes close at the price point,. there may be a d200s this year or early next which tweaks things a little

the next camera is likely a d2xs / d2hs replacment, whether they will keep 2 pro level bodies with different pixel count or change the crop factor who knows,. perhaps a d3 with choice of sensors switchable by the user

VinnyP, I guess the new body will be announced before xmas,. if the specs don't meet your requirements then pick up a d2xs second hand perhaps from someone getting ready to switch

Re: D2X RIP but what should I do for a replacement?

Ok decision time is here. The D3 is not for me. I like DX Sensors for reach and don't want 2 D3s as I like to have a more compact 2nd body with built in flash. So I'd need to carry too many lenses.

I've decided, on paper, the D300 with grips is going to be perfect (and cheaper) for me. But I am scared of being an early adopter. I have the money for a D2x burning a hole in my pocket. If they don't have any glaring errors then I will replace both the D2X and the D200 with 2 D300s. I then may sell the D200 but will probably sell the D2Hs and keep the D200 as a spare (maybe use the extra cash to get an 18-200 and keep it in my main car)

BUT to be sure of getting them in time for December I will need to pre-order. I am considering 3 options and would welcome any other ideas or observations on the 3 from the people here.

1) I take a chance and pre order 2 now to be sure (Can't even pre order the grips yet) but risk they have fundamental problems (D200 banding 1D MkIII Autofocus)
2) Buy a used D2Xs to replace my smashed one then sell when I get back knowing the arrival of the D3 and D300 will mean I take hit but should still be cheaper than renting.
3) Pre order one to run alongside my D200 just in case they have issues
