d40 or 40x?

i am 16 and i am seriously thinking of becoming a photographer as a career, but i don't have a very good camera. i want to upgrade from my KODAK Z612. i think that the Nikon d40 is my best met since i am on a budget. i have looked this up and some sites say that the 10MP of the 40x is much better and worth the extra $200, and some say that megapixels dont mean jack. please help i am so confused...

Hi and welcome to Pixalo The D40(x) is a good entry level camera, good to learn on and the extra MP only matters when you print. On the whole you won't notice the difference and you might be better putting that $200 to a good lens.

Re: d40 or 40x?

If it is any help, my D70s has the same resolution as the D50, and I've got an A2 sized print on my wall which looks great. The advantage of having more resolution is, as stephen said, in printing, but more specifically, if you are enlarging small cropped areas of an image.

There are some really good deals on the D50 at the moment, and that could allow the purchase of a lens too.

Keep doing your homework, and it will become clear which way to go.

Re: d40 or 40x?

Have a look at a used D50. I am also 16 (hehe), and I have found the D50 a perfect place to start, it's cheap and very good! I would go there before looking at the D40 / D40x.
Will also help you to save more money to buy a good lens!
