D800E or not
Hi all,
Ok I've spotted the D800E and seen it in the shop (yes they were showing the D4 as well, not for sale as yet) and read a few test reviews. And I'm in doubt. As I said before I'm not interested in the video aspect and find it a shame we have to pay for this as well, but hey we go with the times! I would prefer the D800E without the video and pay less! I'm interested in the better low light features and the higher iso results and the filter against the moire, face detection seems better. For future it would do me good. 36mb per photo is a lot, but can also be very handy. I've got a few things to sell to be able to purchase the camera. But I don't want to make mistakes. For example, I'm gonna sell my 85 prime lens and both camera's D700 and D300 to make sure I've got most of the money available. My experience is that I just don't like to sit behind photoshop for long as I've not got the patience for it. I also don't use my primes often enough as they limit me too much. Is it worth selling my 85mm though (or am I going to regret it). I do more and more studiowork. I bought the D300 for my macro work, but still is limited in low light, so I leave it more asside. I could also in time change my macro lens in something that gets me closer to the bugs, like a 130mm or whatever is available. In the past I've been buying and selling like I don't know what and that I do not want anymore. I've seen the light of buying when needed The D700 hasn't shown any limits for me at all if I'm honest (really don't want to be honest, but lets use my sensible side ). The reason I'm thinking about it now, is that if I wait, the camera's go down in value. So sell before I need to add a lot more money onto a hopefully brilliant camera that give me good results. By the way, you haven't seen any of my work as I'm juggling between my digital photography classes and work and kids and a lot more. But honestly, I'm using my D700 well and truely So who can put me on my place and tell me if it would be wise to invest in a new D800E or not

Re: D800E or not
Not sure that face detection would be high on my list of necessary features and Don't forget that you will also have to update your software too. 36mb files? No thanks. This might mean you'll also need bigger hard drives and maybe a new computer to handle them too.
IIRC Nikon Capture NX2 is the only software that can (at the moment) handle the unfiltered files. Also the D800E with its fewer features and no filters is dearer than the D800 Only you can decide if not having a back up camera and making the various upgrades is worth it.Put it this way. I'm not going to get one. If you are principally doing studio and low light work perhaps a used medium format camera with a digital back would be a better bet.

Re: D800E or not
Stephen, no, no more kids. 3 is enough
Still they keep my occupied though. And your right, they are already working on the D900. Face detection. I'm not sure either (if I'm honest). I only use everything manual. My inital reaction for the D800 was that I thought it was dissapointing of the few changes they came with. After 3 years they couldn't come up with anything better. But then I started reading and it started to florish. I've done it before by selling bits that I later regretted. So I think I should just stop thinking and continue enjoying the gear I've got. And I do enjoy my digital photography course as well. It gets me out and I do learn a lot Thank you both for your input, I think it put me back in line again

Re: D800E or not
Well I'm just the same as everyone else I get caught up in the "must have" mania but to be honest when I look at what my intended use of the images is I should be content with what I've got.
PS rumour has it that the 36mb Sony manufactured sensor can't be used by Sony until 2014 for contractual reasons, I wonder if that will when they launch their next FF camera - or have they a bigger one up their sleeve? Just a thought, I wonder if someone is thinking of using the newest technique to produce a chip with fewer pixels but more space and presumably less noise than could be achieved in the past |

Re: D800E or not
It's absurt really isn't it. Buying another camera every 2 years for prices like they are now is rather daft. But you do get caught up in the must have mania that's been created by the industries and I just have to step back sometimes.
At least there are some sensible people here on pixalo who talk some sense into me

Re: D800E or not
Sensible head says if you have not reached the limits of your current camera, then don't change just for the sake of it. That said, we're only on this planet once & if you can afford it & get a bizz, then do it
![]() From the short reviews I've seen, I'm not sure the E version is worth the extra money. According to what size prints you are producing vs sharing images online, you could be spending a lot of time downsizing all these files in the 1st place, thus raising the question why the need for 36Mb files ![]() I won't be buying one as I can't justify the costs ..... but then I spend much more on cars that I don't need ... go figure If it's your passion & it's not going to put you in debt, then go for it BTW drop me a line when you look to sell the D700. If I haven't spent too much building my car I might treat myself

Re: D800E or not
I would not advocate buying a new camera until the current camera no longer meets your needs. It is not just that you might spend money and gain little but the change of camera becomes a diversion away from photography.

Re: D800E or not
Dave, no I'm not selling my D700. I've completely come of the idea of changing to D800E.
I've not got a good enough reason for myself to even justify the costs and Dave Canon is right about what he said. So I'm just gonna enjoy my gear further which I am doing a lot nowadays

Re: D800E or not
I think buying a new camera is all part of the hobby or ocupation! if you are flush then why not! do we all wait for driving the car to its limits before we change that for another..........
