Re: D90 or D5100
I think that the D5100 comes in below the D90, but I can't remember now why!
You really need to look at the specifications to see where they differ and if one or other of them will suit you better. The D5100 has newer technology, but to me it seems to aimed more at the less serious photographer as it has for instance, a Special Effects mode. The 5100 has no focus motor, but does have an articulating LCD, and can get a stop higher ISO. They are very close, and as I said, it is really only you who can tell which one will suit you best.

Re: D90 or D5100
The immediate consideration I would have is what lens set have I got, and why am I changing up? The 5100 can only auto-focus the new AF-S (and somewhat older and rarer AF-I) lenses. Any AF lens requiring a motor in the camera (D90 has it), will need to be manual focused (as in D5100). I handled a flying colleague's D5100 last weekend fitted with 18-200mm. Although small, it felt very nice in the hand. If you're prepared to be limited by the lens set then it might do, but I suspect you're growing out of your D70 and want to experiment more. As has been said earlier, I'ld still keep the options of a second hand D300/D300s open as you can even program older lenses into the camera's database, allowing more useful exposure control.
If you have access to the users' area of Nikon's website you can download non-printable versions of the manuals for detailed comparison, a worth-while study.
