Do I Purchase a 5DMk3 or a 1DMk4

Hi Guys
You advice - experience - opinions please.
I shoot a lot of wildlife and aviation subjects and so most of what I do is outdoors. I currently have a 1DMk3 and I am looking for a second body (and maybe relegate the 1DMk3 as a spare). My dilemma is wether to go for a 1DMk4 or 5DMk3. I try to purchase good second hand stuff as its a bit easier to swallow than new prices. Normally a 500/f4 would hang off the end and the 1.3x crop is an advantage, but for a similar used price I can get a 5DMk3! Help....

Re: Do I Purchase a 5DMk3 or a 1DMk4

Not a Canon user, but when I bought my Nikon D700, I kept my D300 to use as a second body. In the lead up to buying the D700 I also considered buying a second D300 so I'd have two identical cameras, or a used D3s.

I looked at the photography that I do and concluded that I did not need what the D3 could offer, and did not want the bulk and weight. I decided to get the D700 as it did give the elements of the D3 that were important to me like image quality and as I was keeping the D300, I'd have the crop body as well as the full frame so having the best of both worlds.

Have you thought of hiring a 5DmkIII with a view to buying if it suits you? If you speak to places like MPB who advertise on Pixalo they might be able to accommodate you.

At one time I had a 5D and a 40D with the idea that all bases are covered. I loved the 5D for landscapes and portraits and the 40D for sport and birds so if I was in your shoes again I would get a 5D3.

Re: Do I Purchase a 5DMk3 or a 1DMk4

I have the 1DMk4, it's the dream camera in every way for me. I use 1.4x and the 100-400 and for me it's the best I could scape together. I also use the 50mm f/1.4 and the 100mm f/2.8 for portraits of my family. These 3 lenses, one for wildlife and two for close up portraits gives me everything I could ever ask for. I am a non professional but I do get regular requests for my twisted mix of color and infrared. I owe that to this forum who have keep me more towards the center and try to make good photographic processing a reference for fine art. It has helped and I know if you remain on a course like that you'll wake up one day and know what camera fills that creative question you ask. Good luck

Re: Do I Purchase a 5DMk3 or a 1DMk4

I haven't done the sums but the 22mp full frame might end up better and more pixels when you crop it to 1.3 to match the 16mp of the 1d4 might find the AF is also better on the 5d

Depends also if you'd be happy with the smaller form factor of the 5d as said I'd see about renting them to find out which might work best for you

Re: Do I Purchase a 5DMk3 or a 1DMk4

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the advice. Having the 1DMk3 already I am familiar with the size and weight, its just the Mk4 is technically better. I have a club shoot next week so I will try and hire a 5DMk3 and see how I get on. I am still moving towards a 1DMk4 though, similar batteries, used to handling, and the 1.3x gives me a bit extra at the end of a 500f4. I take your point about full frame vs crop and the amount of Pixels. Wildlife can be fickle and sometimes you have to crop a picture. Indoor portrait stuff is easier because you can always get the subject as full a frame as you want. I will let you know my final decision.....

Sounds like the best thing to do is to sell the 1DmkIII and buy a 5DmkIII and a 1DmkIV.

You know it makes sense

Re: Do I Purchase a 5DMk3 or a 1DMk4

I was in a simmilar predicament some years ago and actualy did the equivalent of Dabhand16s remark. I replaced my old 5d with a 1Ds11 and my 40D with a 1D11n. It worked for a few years but I missed the extra reach of the C format so got a 550d (well it was cheaper than getting a 600mm lens) I have never been a victim of "inertia through research" and usualy end up getting more than I intended. Still I would only waste the money on things like clothes or food! Charles.

Outdoors? Wildlife? Aviation? Go for the new 7D MkII - when it's released in a few months!

Although I take quite a few landscapes and portraits and an increasing amount of studio, I've found my 7D more than holds it's own - and it's great for wildlife and macro!

Re: Do I Purchase a 5DMk3 or a 1DMk4

Just an update so far.
We had a club portrait evening (And Dabhand knows what they can be like!!) last Friday and I managed to get hold of a 5D3, stuck my 50f1.2 and away I went. On balance images were comparable to my 1D3 on this subject matter - subject fills the frame, crisp and clear etc. The following day being fine and bright I took some images of Goldfinches on my feeders deliberately small in the frame to try cropping to see the results. Yes they were good - as you would expect for twice the Mpixels - but nothing competes with good fieldcraft and getting the subject as fuller frame as possible.

Canon have been very cute, the biggest observation by me and all the other club members was how vibrant and sharp the preview images were on the camera screen, but all you are supposed to use that screen for is composition and histogram. Wait until the images are on your calibrated monitor at home to make the decision! Secondly, there are so many features on the camera that unless you have a mind like an IBM mainframe you are never going to use, or remember, how to set it up.

Do I think its worth the £2000+ ...... NO. For my type of photography there has to be other choices. Moving on to the 1D4 will be the next evaluation!

Pics! Pics!

Great that you managed to try one, and yes, modern cameras have a lot of features that a lot of people will never use - technology for technology's sake. But it all boils down to horses for courses and at least you have used one and know what it can do.

I'm surprised that you say that the 5D3 produced images comparable to your 1D3. I would have thought that they would have been better. I presume that the price you quoted is for a new one and that must be similar to the price of a used 1Dmk4.

Don't forget that the LCD is showing a jpg image and if the picture controls were set up for high saturation, sharpness and contrast you would be seeing that and not a 'natural' image.

the preview image on the back of the camera may have been because the camera may have ADL (auto dynamic lighting) or whatever they've called it these days,. if you shoot raw then images will typically look different (best to turn that off if you shoot raw I think)

Re: Do I Purchase a 5DMk3 or a 1DMk4

As my elements is getting on a bit it would not read the 5D3 RAW files so I shot everything in .jpg. I think thats why the red on Crystal is to red - not sure. The other Crystal image was done on the 1D3 and started off as a RAW file, all I did was re size for this site.

You can find a used 5D3 for about 2k, a 1D4 about 2.3k, the same price as a new 5D3. I did try to turn off unnecessary settings before the shoot but I think a little more time and understanding would be required if I owned one!

I have uploaded 4 images to my gallery if you want to have a look, couldn't work out how to get them in the body of this message, sorry.

Here they are! The crop of the bird is impressive (I mean the feathered one)

You are right to factor in software costs. If I ever upgraded my camera I'd have to also upgrade Lightroom, Photoshop (would have to buy again outright), some onOne software and maybe one or two others. That would cost in the region of £1000!!
