Finaly chose a camera :)
i visited jessops this morning with £700 in my pocket and after pondering for over an hour with the nikon d80, d70s and the canon 400d on the table in front of me i finaly chose.....wait for it...drum roll please....
i chose the canon so im now officialy on the canon wagon.the d80, it was a bit big for my hands, was like holding a breeze block to me but i gotta say it was a nice camera, im only just scraping 5'6" so u can guess by that my hands aint all that big the same with the d70s.the main reasons i chose canon after playing with the cameras was it felt a little better in my hands and when i get the battery grip it wont make as much of a difference as the nikons would have. also i liked the way the 400d's sensor turns off the lcd when u goto take pics, im new to all this but i thought that was snazzy, the cleaning system was also a selling point, and it seemed to focus very quick on the subjects i focused on and the images were crisp...but so too were the nikons so no-one scored any points on that call! for my £700 i got the camera 15-55mm lens, tamron 70-300mm lens, 2gb cf card, and a 300 afd flash (all be it jessops own brand but hey...beggers cant be choosers and its a start), ive been playing with it for the last couple of hours, only in auto mode taking pics of my bullmastiff, i think hes getting annoyed with the flash so ill give him a rest now...its a nice little camera i cant complain, so thanks all for your help so far im sure ill be asking you all some more questions in the near future the kids will be back from school soon so im off to annoy them now....cya all soonp.s...lol im askin sooner than you thought, ive had this happen twice now, if i dont take a pic for a while and it shuts down lcd to save on battery when i then half press the shutter and release to ready it again then goto take a pic the shutter kinda thuds (seems more harder than usual) and dont take a pic, am i doing something bad? it takes a pic straight after,... sorry for whats probably a silly question but it does go with a right thud. thanx again. and i hope im posting this in the right place! |

Re: Finaly chose a camera :)
Congrats on the new camera - looking forward to seeing many photos. Regards the shutter I can't help but I would suggest reading the manual, and then read it again and then read it properly
there could be something in there about it.

One thought I had was that when you don't take a pic for a while the whole camera goes into standby mode (not just the lcd), so when you half press the shutter and the camera turns itself back on again perhaps it's the sensor cleaning opperation kicking in. I could be on the wrong track here as I have the 350D (the model before yours) which dosn't have the sensor cleaning function, as such I don't know what it sounds like when working, or if it's an automatic function or something you have to select before it works.

Re: Finaly chose a camera :)
Yes, I'm with Sonsey on that. I think you will find it is the ultra-sonic cleaner which shakes the sensor. Be assured though it isn't the sensor itself that is making a noise, it is the mechanism that is doing the vibrating so is quite normal.
If you are getting clunks from your mirror mechanism that is something entirely different and you should get that checked out. It is possible that you simply weren't expecting there to be much noise if you have moved up from a compact camera: this often surprises people but the fact is you have a mirror plate that is being flipped up and down while your shutter, considerably bigger and mechanical than the little thing inside a compact, opens and shuts at very high speed. Let us know how it goes and we look forward to seeing some pics. Cheers, Rob

Re: Finaly chose a camera :)
The other thing you could do is if there is an option to turn off the sensor cleaning, urn it off and see if the noise is still there or not.
If you can't turn it off and it is still giving you a worry, maybe an e-mail to Canon support will explain it. |

Re: Finaly chose a camera :)
hi all, ok i am by my own accounts a grade "A" dipstick
i have found out what the clunk sound was and u all gonna fall over urself with laughter when i tell u. when there wasnt enough light in the room when i had the camera set on auto the camera filpped up the inbuilt flash (and that was the noise), obviously with the camera upto my face i didnt see this happen, nor have the brains to notice it had done so when i pulled it away i must have thought i had already done it, im guessing the camera doesnt register the shot and allows u to carry on as normal after its popped up the flash, like the camera saying...here numb nuts now do it properly ill try and be more observant in the future and that'll help me not to ask silly questions. so there u go a good laugh for u all at my expense and thanx for trying to help!

Re: Finaly chose a camera :)
the cleaner starts automatic when u turn on camera, also does it again when u turn off and its silent, not sure if u can set it any other way im still only in the 1st quarter of the manual but ill leave it alone even if i can i think.
