hard decision..

i have a d40 and i know someone w/ a d70. i want the more professional feel and options of the d70, and they want the lightweight/ small size of my 40.

So, if i have the chance to trade should I? the d70 has that great 17-70 lense on it which is great, and i wont have that pesky limitation w/ the AF like the d40 has.

My main question is, should i go for and older camera for the more professional features, or just wait until i can afford the d80(which could be years)

Re: hard decision..

If you have had the opportunity to handle the D70 and it has more of what you want, is in good condition etc. I would give the swap some serious consideration. as you say, the 18-70 kit lens is very good.

However, the last model made was the D70s, so you might want to check out the differencies between the D70 and the s version before you jump. I think it might only be a firmware change, but it might also have a larger LCD. This might make an s model a better bet if you can source one. If the differencies ar not great, it could be a good move the go for the D70.

I'm sure there are other members that will be able to tell you what the differencies are.

Re: hard decision..

D70s was just firmware (which you can apply to D70) plus larger LCD as Graham stated.

Question is will you stick to D70 if you can afford D80 by next year. Only reason being which camera will depreciate less in meantime ....D40 or D70

Good point Dave - but if this quote is accurate, I think the D70 would serve him better in the meantime, and will allow more choice of lenses that could then be carried forward to a D80 in the future.

Of course, it could be that I'm biased.........

Re: hard decision..

Well lets put it this way ..... am I shooting better pics with D200 vs my D70 in past .....marginally. With D200 costing 3-4 x D70 s/h costs, do I get 3-4x better shot ....not a chance ....try putting a 0. in front of that & still that is pushing it.

Therefore D70 is a cracking camera for the dosh

Re: hard decision..

I would also say go for it. The choice of lenses for the D70 is much more flexible than the D40 and can be used with a D80 in future I have just bought a D40x plus VR lenses as at 76 I dont want lug a tripod everywhere. However the D70 is still my work horse.
It is a very fine Camera>

Re: hard decision..

I'd agree with the other comments, I had a D70, got a D80, and gave my wife the D70. She had been using a bridge type camera (Olympus C750), which can be very frustrating with it's shutter delay. I still sometimes think that the D70 takes a sharper pic. Andrea says I can have it back if I buy her a D200!!!!!!

I'll stick with the D80 for now...

He would! At least 50% of what he says is for effect only - the other 50% is irrelevant!

If the D70 is in good condition and hasn't too high a shutter count, I'd say go for it - it's providing a platform on which to start building up your camera gear
