Question Help me choose my first DSLR!!

Hello everyone...after a long struggle i am finally getting my first DSLR. I have chosen the Canon 600d, but the problem lies in choosing the right lens.

I am getting it online and there are quite a few choices to choose from. The different lens which comes with the cam are:

1) 18-55mm kit lens + 55-250mm IS

2) 18-135mm IS kit lens

3) Tamron AF 18-200mm kit lens

4) 18-55mm kit lens + tamron 70-300mm

I would be interested in taking a lot of nature and landscape photos (which includes birds and occasional wildlife). The other areas would be street and function photography (and sometimes portraits) -(OOPS did I mention everything).

Please suggest me the best option that i should take as I am really confused.

Your help is really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Help me choose my first DSLR!!

Your interests of landscape and nature really lie at opposite ends of the lens scale. Landscapes generally need wide to normal human eye view - 18 to 30 mm, so the 18-55 kit lens will fit this to start with. For nature long lenses are best so the 70-300 will suit this application.

The 18-200 is a good general purpose lens but is obviously shorter than the 70-300. The Tamron 18-270mm gets good press and just might cover your initial needs in one lens. You could buy a camera body and combine it with this lens.

Re: Help me choose my first DSLR!!

Thank you for the response. However, i cannot afford to buy a separate lens. It has to be something from that combo I mentioned. Let us say I will concentrate more on landscape rather than nature (considering they lie at opposite ends of the lens scale). Then what would be your suggestion. Will the 18-135mm be a good fit, or what do you suggest.

Re: Help me choose my first DSLR!!

For landscape the 18-55 will do the job. Your option 4 with the 18-55 and Tamron 70-300 will give you pretty much everything you want to start with.

Re: Help me choose my first DSLR!!

What difference does a Tamron and Canon lens have? I hear people say Tamron is not as sharp as Canon, but I am not sure. Does it make a huge difference?

Re: Help me choose my first DSLR!!

This will depend on the lenses in question. Some Canon lenses will be superior to third party lenses, but some won't be. I recently read a review that concluded that the new Tamron 150-600mm was better than the very well respected, but now old design Canon 100-400. The Tamron 24-70 is also getting rave reviews and can be considered as good as the main brand 24-70 lenses and Steve always rated the Sigma 10-20 as good as the Canon 10-22

So no blanket X is always better than Y I'm afraid.

Re: Help me choose my first DSLR!!

I get it. So I guess I will going with the last option (18-55mm kit lens + tamron 70-300mm). [I would appreciate if you can compare the tamron 70-300mm with its Canon counterpart in short]

Re: Help me choose my first DSLR!!

I'm not a Canon user so have no experience with any Canon lenses. I would guess that the Tamron is as good as the standard Canon 70-300, but if Canon make a 70-300L then that is likely to be better than the Tamron. more to the point though is are you going to notice any difference?

These threads might help

http://www.pixalo.com/community/came...usm-24008.html

No Tamron thread to compare, but the Sigma 70-300 (and this one is not the better APO version) is here:

http://www.pixalo.com/community/came...apo-28556.html

EDIT: Just noticed that there is only one picture in the Sigma thread!

Re: Help me choose my first DSLR!!

Hello fume.

My opinion for what it's worth.

I have a Nikkor 18/70 lens and I'm not that struck on it to be honest. It's ok. I'd that now have a 35mm DX lens I sue my legs instead...... I'd rather have the extra sharpness.

The zoom does ok and took some quite nice images of butter flies a few days ago. A (nice) prime is an ambition now tho'.

Re: Help me choose my first DSLR!!

If you want some fairly brutal advice, don't buy any of that. Kit lenses tend to be a real disappointment. Spend more money on lenses, save the difference by buying a second-hand 450 or 500D body. It's not all about pixel counts.
