Lack of spot metering in Canon 400d

Help! Agonising for ages over 1st DSLR between Canon 400d and Nikon D80, almost decided on Canon due to budget (less pricey plus has the software.) But not sure how much the lack of spot metering is going to affect my photography in the future - I would quite like to do try my hand at portraits. Incidentally, any comments on my choice of lense - Sigma f2.8 24-70?

Re: Lack of spot metering in Canon 400d

I've moved you post here where I think it will get more replies.

FWIW, for me, spot metering is very desireable, but there are plenty of members here that have had/still own models with no spot metering. I guess they will be able to give the best advice rather than someone who has had spot metering since I bought my Olympus OM2 SP - and yes, the SP stands for spot meter, and it was the feature I was after at the time.

I do find it useful, but you can work around it. If the camera fulfils all of the other things you want, it is cheaper to learn how to work around it than to get a more expensive model. Maybe the 30D is the answer? I'm sure that has a spot meter and will be cheaper now due the the 40D release.

Re: Lack of spot metering in Canon 400d

as a 400d owner i have to say that lack of spot metering is the ONLY thing i dont like about the camera, and as Graham mentioned its not impossible to work round it. its like every camera there is going to be a limitation, but u have to weigh up the pros and cons, and in my humble opinion there are far more Pros to outweigh the cons.

Re: Lack of spot metering in Canon 400d

I tried the 400D and the 30D which indeed does has spot metering - and you can get some really good deals at moment because the 40D has just been released.

I bought the 30D and paid just under £600 with the 18mm-55mm lens in August sure you must be able to get it slightly cheaper now...

Also this was my first DSLR and when I bought the 30D I knew nothing about metering etc...now how ever I use spot metering 99% of the time...

Hope that helps...

Don't worry about it at all. Just buy the one that feels best in your hands and smile a lot.
