Micro-focus adjustment

I am thinking of buying a new camera and was thinking of the canon 40D. But then came across this link Canon 50D versus 40D! . And saw this question "Micro-focus adjustment". What does this mean? In addition, it mentions about live view only being able to manual focus in live view.

So what one will be the best buy. I have been using a 400D for over 12 months. But hopefully I have sold it.

Does anyone have any images that i can view or compare.

Cheers.

Re: Micro-focus adjustment

I have a 40 d and have used live view on a couple of occasions just to see how it works. In each case the camera was on a tripod and the manual only focus was not a problem. I do not know what the Micro focus adjustment is. There is a picture in my gallery that of a hard drive head was taken with the 100 mm Canon macro lens using Live view.

Drive head - Pixalo Photo Gallery

I found this very easy to do.

Re: Micro-focus adjustment

The Micro Focus Adjustment allows you to make small adjustments to the the focus - irrelevant if your lens focus (it can be set on a 'per lens' basis) is OK.

I've yet to use Live View usefully - have tried a couple of shots to see if it works (portraits) and it does seem to work but, a bit like video, has marginal if any use for me

Personally, I think the 40D represents very good value for the money against the 50D (which appears to fall in the trap of 'more pixels is good' trap without actually improving things overall) - maybe I'll change my mind (but it'll take a hefty price drop on the 50D to do so!)

Re: Micro-focus adjustment

The micro adjustment should be thought more of a lens/camera calibration rather than focus adjustment. Sometimes you may get small differences with certain lens/camera combinations and the micro adjustment allows correction in those cases.

Two things about that though...first it is not very common to find the issue in the first place, quality controls in the factory usually are pretty good. Secondly, should you happen to get a lens that is not optimum with your body then you can have the two calibrated for free anyway.

In other words, it may be nice to have, you may never use it and there is also a chance that you could make things worse by doing so. I wouldn't see that feature as a deal breaker personally

Thanks Markulous & steve.

I think i will be heading towards the 40D. But WAIT what about the difference in the DIGIC 4 processor & DIGIC III processor. Will this make a big difference.

Cheers.

Not except to your wallet, unless you want to use it as a video camera.

Seriously, there's nothing wrong with the 40D and little reason to spend more on a 50D unless you really need the extra pixels. If you don't, they'll just chew up disk space and processing power.

There's your answer - additional processing power needed to handle all those unecessary extra pixels!

Sorry - your link doesn't work - "You do not have permission..." You'd have to link the image file itself.
