New Canon 5D MarkII upgrade?
Come February Canon will be releasing any new kit or upgrades. I currently have a 30D and was/still might be upgrading to a 40D. I have in the past given the 5D some thought but it is getting a bit long in the tooth and wonder if there is likely to be a 5D MkII?
Point is I really feel in a quandary here. The 30D is superb and you might say why change. Well there are some features in the 40D I like plus I can get a good trade in. But.....I thought why not go full-frame? Excellent for landscapes, which I do a lot of, but maybe not so hot for sport, which I also do a lot of. Then, I thought, if I consider the 5D, why not go the whole hog and get a 1D Mark III. No problems with sport but how is it for portrait and landscape? This is the last upgrade I will do so I need to get it right. Any thoughts on my thoughts would be appreciated. |

Re: New Canon 5D MarkII upgrade?
Although I do really like the 5D, I don't think it's worth the premium over the 30D/40D. I could have bought a 30D when it came out and a 40D when it came out, kept them both and still had change.
I still use my 20D for some things (motorsports mainly) and would be more likely to buy a 40D then a 5D MKII if the price difference doesn't drop a lot. Only time I really feel I really need full frame over cropped is when I'm taking portraits in limited space, you get better control over DoF. The 5D needs good glass as, of course, it uses the edges which the 1.6x doesn't, not too much of a problem for me but if you've got any consumer level lenses it may show the flaws. cheers Dan

If money isn't a problem then why not have 2 cameras ...one for sport & one for landscape. Two totally different subjects , so justify different bodies

Very true - it's all down to economics. Who wouldn't have a higher spec camera if they can afford it?

Re: New Canon 5D MarkII upgrade?
When I bought the 5D I decided to keep the 20D for bird photography or, for that matter, any other kind of photography in which it's not easy to fill the frame with the main subject. The reason being that although the 20D has fewer pixels they are spread over a smaller area and do in fact, produce a higher pixel density. However, I am so pleased with the results from the 5D and it is so easy to handle, helped by the larger viewing screen, that my 20D never sees the light of day. It would if I did sports photography where its 5 fps is almost twice as fast as the 3 fps on the 5D. I did wonder about the 1D Mk III hoping it might auto focus at f8 so that I could retain auto focus when using the 1.4x extender with my 400 mm lens. I never did get the answer to that question. Then it came to light that Canon have recalled the Mk III due to a focusing fault. So, I will, at least for now, stay with the 5D which I am really pleased with.
