A New Compact Camera, maybe?

Besides our main DSLR most people have a second camera for a back up, it maybe a DSLR but for some people that travel light it has to be a compact camera of some discription, I wonder what I would buy if money was no object, just what would you buy?

Re: A New Compact Camera, maybe?

For what it's worth, I'm just about to buy the Sony NEX 5N. I already own the Canon 7D but I wanted something more portable. I'm deliberately not using the word pocketable because depending on the lens you put on it, you'd still need pretty big pockets. However, I'm going to either get the 16mm pancake lens, or possible the Sigma EX 30mm (which is an E mount lens). I've started doing, and enjoying, more street photography, but the 7D is just way too indiscrete for this, whereas the Sony and pancake combo will work much better (okay, a Leica would be best but the budget does stretch to one sadly). I have big enough pockets for the combo, although I may use my Black Rapid under my open jacket. Either way, still a very portable combo in my opinion.

Re: A New Compact Camera, maybe?

I am in the market for a compact as I can't always have my DSLR with me (sometimes my job is filthy so I don't take it). Sadly money is an object so I was thinking of saving for a Lumix TZ18. My friends have a previous model and the shots it takes while not of DSLR quality are excellent.

Actually thinking about it, even if money was no object, I'd still get something along those lines, it's never going to replace my 7d so no point spending stupid amounts on it.

If money was no object it would be very difficult to resist the temptation to have a Leica M9 - not strictly compact, but lighter and smaller than most DSLRs and ... well the Leica lenses + the absolute discrete way you can quietly work with it ... one day maybe

Re: A New Compact Camera, maybe?

A leica is a bit on the large size, I was thinking more on the compact size, the Sony would still be too big unless you put a pancake lens on and that may be a little restrictive......my type of lens would be something between 24-85mm FX or 16-85mm DX....fixed or interchangable.....

After trying, over the years, the G9,G11,S95 plus a couple of Fuji products;I just could not live with the image quality and restrictions of the small sensors.
So as a back up to my Dslr's I went for the X100 and having become accustomed to its little quirks I've come to love it;its fast becoming my main use camera!

I have looked at the X100....and the XPro 1 they both look good and can deliver the goods, these 2 cameras are on the list but they are expensive so a lot of thought has to be given on these.......any more idea's folks....

It looks like Sony's new RX100 is just the ticket.

Re: A New Compact Camera, maybe?

I am keen on the Fuji X10. Looks classic and strong and pretty discrete for street photography. For my trail running the Canon s100 looks really compact and wide 24mm (equivalent 35) Both offer raw and full manual control.

The Fuji X10 is often described as the baby of X100. I see prices have dropped below 400 pound , still alot of money but when it first came out is was in the 500 pound mark

Re: A New Compact Camera, maybe?

My purchase of photographic equipment is based on a number of issues with money being fairly minor. It is a false assumption that everyone would buy more or different equipment if they had the available cash. In reality most of us have many other priorites and so do not sink all spare funds into photography. For me more important issues are:-

a. Will a new purchase improve/broaden my photography
b. Even if yes, do I have the time to pursue these new things
c. The weight of the equipment is now becoming more critical so replacing may be feasible but adding is not
d. I have never carried a back up camera as I am an amateur but never had a camera failure either.

So currently I am more than happy with my EOS 5D Mkii and my set of 3 zoom lenses. I would like a really good Macro lens but have not bought one simply because I do not currently have the time to branch out into macro photography. A particular point Des is making is about travelling light and this does resonate with me. On my recent holiday, I took my 70-200 f2.8 lens (which weighs 1.5 Kg) but it stayed in the hotel safe the whole time because it was too heavy to carry about particularly because it was 38 degrees.

I have been considering buying a Bridge Camera having recent bought one for my son a Panasonic Lumix FZ45. The performance and quality is very good and it produces Raw files. I could see me just using my heavy DSLR equipment on specific photoshoots but just carrying a Bridge camera at other times rather than as a back up.

Re: A New Compact Camera, maybe?

You are right Dave....there are other issues than buying a back up camera! I have considered a bridge camera, I had a E5700 when they first came out it allways delivered good sharp images but was awfull in cold weather, when travelling I take one DSLR a short zoom and 70-300 and a compact (my wifes) that is enough to carry and as the temperature rises it gets heavier as you know, and sometimes the longer zoom does not come out of the bag, I am a great believer in useing your legs to get closer if poss. So just sometimes I wonder wether a smaller and lighter camera would be a better choice.......and up to now my money looks better in the bank! Best Wishes, Des
