I'm more than happy with my purchase of D50, I think until my ability has got better this will suffice. In hindsight, I wouldn't have bought the lenses that I did (both kit lenses), I should have shelled out some extra (which I've now done).

It was decided that my budget be increased to $1,500, so I was able to get a D80, an Nikon 18-70mm and a 70-300mm VR, a SB-600 speed light, a Pelican 1300 hard case, and a Velbon VGB 37 tripod.

Re: Nikon D40 vs D40x vs D50 vs D70 vs D80 vs D200 - Did you make the right choice ?

I've just bought the D80 Kit - Body and AF-S DX 18-135 lens. It's really nice and I go all warm inside when I pick it up, I think that might tick the 'I'm happy with my choice' box :-)

While looking around for lens comparisons I stumbled upon this forum, after reading some of the posts I joined up.

Hoping to learn how to use the camera now, it's been a burning desire to learn photography for more years than I can remember. I've finally bought a camera, now I need to learn how to use it. I know lots about computers and next to nothing about camera's or photography.

Nice to meet you all :-)

Adrian

Re: Nikon D40 vs D40x vs D50 vs D70 vs D80 vs D200 - Did you make the right choice ?

Back in August I discovered I had diabetes. Up until then I had been a very active diver and this news unfortunately meant that I had to give up the deep stuff, adhering to strict depth limits that weren't feasible for my type of diving and therefore creating quite a large hole in my calendar. I'd been keen on photography for many years but mainly with compacts and underwater stuff. After speaking with my wife about possible alternatives (although she didn't let on I knew she didn't like me doing the deep dives) we decided that I should rekindle my interest in golf and photography. A few ebay sales of my kit later I'm now the proud owner of a nice set of clubs and a Nikon D40, 18-55 and 55-200 kit, with SB400 flash, polarisor, tripod and a Tamron 90mm Macro and Nikkor 50mm F1.8 on their way

I went with the D40 based on the entry level specifications, the price and the cashback offer. I figured that if I ended up taking more than a passing interest in photography I could always upgrade at a later date. Suffice to say that I have rediscovered my enthusiasm and loving the camera

Got the D80 instead of the D40 or D50 simply because of the Nikon Creative Lighting system that is not available on the others.

Got a D80 at the end of the summer with a 18-70mm lens package. More than happy with it, easy to navigate through functions/features/set-up etc.

My 1st DSLR and it's the bizz.

Just wish I had a longer lens now

D70 3 1/2years ago already had Nikon film equipment so it was a easy move to digital. As it had paid for its self several times over I was going to upgrade to a D200 last summer but saw the D300 was on its way so waited for a D300.
