Nikon D70 vs D200 - Image quality

Evil Owl wrote a great review of the D200 in the Equipment Review section. Just wondering for those people who have upgraded from the D70 to the D200, how much improvement have you found in the Image Quality of your shots ?

Be even more interesting if you chuck the new 10.2mp model in to the equation when it is launched.

Don't expect a massive jump in image quality over the D70, the pictures are better given the same glass on both but it's the overall package that makes it a worthwhile upgrade.

Noise control at higher ISO's is worth mentioning, and this is a big improvement on the D70.

I've found the image quality to be a lot better than the D70 when you nail the shot, to give you an example this is a 200% crop of a shot taken with the D200 and 80-200mm AF-S lens and straight from the camera, there is no way the D70 (whilst a very good camera) could have captured this:

The two main points I have noticed with the D200 is that the colour rendition appears better and there is little or no processing required, I've always found my D70 to underexpose slightly and moving to the D200 has been a joy in that respect as well as cutting down my workflow time.

The camera feels better all round, slightly bigger so it fits the hand better and appears to be a lot more robustly built, the larger screen and viewfinder are a godsend and now I'm getting used to it I love it. When I was using it for the first time at the rock concert I was also using the D70 and that felt like a toy after the D200.

I'll do a more in depth review in a few weeks once I've had a chance to put it through it's paces.

Thanks for that Colin Now whether to sell D70 before D80 has impact on s/h prices or not

Keep it as a second body, that's what I've done, you never know when you might need it.
