Re: nikon D90 or some other DSLR

you can start with something even a little less costly like a Nikon D80 it's not that big a difference except the D90 also takes HD video, but if your interested in photography I would go the D80 route.
I have one and don't regret it at all now a days you can get a D80 for 'almost' half the price of the D90 if you look in the right places.
but like you said you are going to wait 2-3 years by then it's going to be a whole different story as for Nikon and Canon come up with something new every year and make it harder to choose what to buy .

Re: nikon D90 or some other DSLR

I have just upgraded (from a Nikon D50 to a Nikon D90), but I would go with the suggestion of j sotelo, save your money and go for the Nikon D80.... perhaps if you have the extra money, you could purchase a good tripod, filters etc.......

Perhaps some good books, magazines would be a worthwhile inverstment to give you instruction, ideas and more importantly inspiration!!!

Good luck and shop around... you will get a nice price....

Re: nikon D90 or some other DSLR

Sam - You PM'd me asking for advice on the Tamron 18-270 and Nikon 18-200 with the D90. I can't comment on the Nikon lens as I'm a Canonian but I have posted some info on the Tamron 18-270.

Pixalo Photographic Equipment Reviews - AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspheric [IF] Macro -

Also some sample images...

http://www.pixalo.com/community/shot...ots-29446.html

I've been rather preoccupied with other things recently and have not had much chance to take photos, but I haven't changed my mind about the Tamron lens. It is capable of very good results if you avoid shooting wide open (best around f/8 - f/11) and it is a remarkably convenient all-in-one lens. I'm very fond of it.

The independent reviews I've seen of this lens, the Nikon 18-200 and the new Canon 18-200 suggest that they all have their strengths and weaknesses, and each is best at a different point in the focal length range. Purists will argue that lenses with this range can never be as good as prime lenses or fast, short-range zooms. They're probably right, but whether you'd see any real-world difference in 'normal' shots is another matter.

Re: nikon D90 or some other DSLR

Given that you live and photograph in India, where the climate is often very humid, even wet, I would caution the purchase of the semi-pro cameras. These are much better in their defenses against damp, dust and are very solidly made.
I have used a Nikon D70 for several years, and was conscious of its fragility compared with the Pro grade Nikons. So when a "trip of a Lifetime" came up, I changed it for a D200. Like the D80 others have mentioned, now that the D300 and D700 are available, there are many D200s available at less than half the new price, in fact less tha the price of a new D90.

IN THIS MONTHS DIGITAL PHOTO MAGAZINE, THE SIGMA 18-200 CAME OUT TOP ON THEIR REVIEWS. I HAVE A NIKON 18-200 AND WISH I HAD WAITED TO BUY THE SIGMA, AS IT IS NEARLY HALF THE PRICE AND NOW HAS IMAGE STABILIZATION .

Always be carefull when you read reviews, I have a feeling that the overall result on the best lens is the price of it! but that is only my opinion.

Re: nikon D90 or some other DSLR

My two cents worth - SKIP the D90. Buy a used D80 or a D200, or if you want buy a new D300.
Auto clean is over rated
Auto focus is awesome and the D80, D200 or the D300 is as good as the D90.
Like I was saying in another post. The D200 and D2xs was the workhorse a few years ago. Now it is the D300. D90 is an in between in my opinion and is not worth it. Get a good used D200 and some nice lenses and you are much better off.
