Re: Nikon D90 vs Canon 50D

Well with the D90's video capability I will now say I was ahead of the game here (point 2) by 2 years !!! :- Predict the future of Digital Photography

Gap between Video Camera & DSLRs to diminish
As storage becomes cheaper & larger in size, at some point you will be able to shoot so many frames per sec on DSLR that you have the equivalent of a Video camera. You'd never miss that split second shot then
Nikon, Canon, I am available for consultancy

Well the D300 does still have quite a few advantages over the D90:
CAM2000(?) autofocus, rather than 1000, 51 pts vs 11.
A possible 8fps vs. 4.5
Weather sealing / build quality
and possibly some others that I haven't thought of.

Re: Nikon D90 vs Canon 50D

The D90 is on Warehouse Express for £899 including the 18-105mm VR lens (and a few freebies) for the pre-order price of £849.99.

The 18-105 VR is listed at £200, so I guess the body only price of £699 is quite accurate. The Canon 50D might struggle at retail being nearly twice the price of the D90; certainly the Nikon camera may well be more attractive to first-time dSLR buyers.

I'm all for competition in the marketplace but it does appear that Canon have priced themselves way over the mark this time.

Re: Nikon D90 vs Canon 50D

I'd buy the Nikon if it their lenses were affordable.

And I do agree that the Canon 50D appears way over priced to the average man on the street. They have done themselves no favours there.

Their lenses are, by and large, affordable - their pro level glass is more costly but they do tend to have slightly higher-quality optics than the Canon equivalents - especially the newer glass such as the 14-24, 24-70 and thier 400, 500 and 600mm primes.

What's missing from Nikon's line-up are the affordable f/4 zooms such as a 70-200 f/4 and so on... these Canon lenses have great price/performance ratios and are accordingly very popular.

Nikon seem to have only two choices: consumer grade or high-end pro grade with nothing in the middle. If you can't afford the price premium of the best lenses then you're often stuck with only a so-so alternative - not good at all.

Thats what I was meaning...in the end the camera body seems to be the most disposable part of the equipment these days and unless you are happy with 'so-so' lenses or have a magabuck's budget then despite their bodies currently offering better features Nikon just doesn't do it for me.

Unfortunately Canon are going the other way..their lenses are great (both medium price and L lines) and affordable but their bodies seem either 2 years out of date or £400 too expensive.

Lets just hope they correct this with the 5DII before its to late !!!

Re: Nikon D90 vs Canon 50D

I have been a Canon 400D user for 2 years so I really want to upgrade to a 50D after seeing the spec. But I do agree the D90 is very attractive with the 720p HD video recording capability. Also, since the latest Nikon (D3/D700/D300) do extremely well in noise controlling at high ISO, D90 should behave similarly. This is yet another great attraction... All I can hope is to see if 50D can produce some comparable noise controlling results with their new processor... Otherwise I will have to wait for another year or so to get a upgrade of my 400D.

Re: Nikon D90 vs Canon 50D

I need to say, I'm also ready to upgrade from my EOS-400 and think at this point, the 'loss' of money to change to Nikon is not too hight.

I also know that the coming change will then most likely set me for a very long time with either Nikon or Canon because this time I also want to buy a good lens.

So, what should I do.... D90 , D300 , 50D and which lens ?

I know, what a question.....
