Pentax CCD-shift Shake Reduction (SR) System

Just been reading about the above new function on the Pentax K100D.

The CCD-shift Shake Reduction (SR) System compensates for camera shake by physically moving the sensor inside the camera. The SR mechanism oscillates the CCD image sensor both horizontally & vertically at high speed using magnetic force.

Unlike the Canon IS & Nikon VR systmes which are built into the lens, the Pentax system is built in the camera, meaning you can use your existing Pentax lenses.

Makes me wonder if Canon & Nikon are going down the right route ? Or is it they can make more money out of selling it at extra cost on each lens ? Anyone see an advantage to Lens stabilisation systems vs Camera ?

Re: Pentax CCD-shift Shake Reduction (SR) System

The new Sony also has an anti-shake system built into the camera.

I see two main sides to this, going from past experiance the IS or anti-shake systems are very effective but not the most robust and reliable technology. Many People have reported IS issue with many lenses and while they always have them fixed it means the equipment is away in the service center. Its a inconvieninace to loose a lens for a week but imagine if the anti-shake in the camera develops a fault, you would loose the camera and all chance of shots.

I would also imagine that for the likes of Canon and Nikon etc that have it in the lenses it would mean a serious hit on profit, you buy 4 lenses and thats four lots of IS rather than none if its in the camera body...

Agree that Nikon & canon are probably in it for the money. Let's hope the likes of Pentax therefore make a larger impact on the market.
