Replacement for Canon S2 IS

My little S2 IS has broken

. When zooming it makes a nasty scraping sound and the lens does not retract easily / at all when switching off. I want to replace it for myself and my wife is getting interested in photography and has been using it recently

The obvious choice would be the Canon S5 but I was just wondering if anyone would recommend another camera. I need a high zoom range and also very close focusing. The S2 is a 1:12it zoom and focuses to the front of the lens, but then it is difficult to get any light on the subject

If you need this zoom range, the S5 IS is one of the best provided you keep to ISO 80 or 100. The Panasonic Lumix FZ8 is also worth a good look.

or if your willing to give up some zoom look at the G9. much better controls, and a smaller package
