Searching for DSLR <$800 with spot metering and autofocus >3 pt.
Hi,
I really want to get into the DSLR game. However, i can't find one with everything. I want spot metering (not partial) and a multi pt. autofocus (more than 3 pts) for a good price (<$800). Does there exist such a camera? It seems as though the new cameras are just focused on increasing the amt. of megapixels, and not upgrading other features such as metering and autofocus. Also, i've heard that the sites which sell good cameras for less are usually scams. does anyone know of a good online vendor that is trustworthy? regards, al |

Re: Searching for DSLR <$800 with spot metering and autofocus >3 pt.
If you want to use extreme lenses, there's not a lot of choice within those parameters. If you're happy with a lens range from (roughly) 18mm to 180mm equivalent, assuming .8x and 1.5x converters, you could consider the Sony R1... http://www.pixalo.com/reviews/showpr...uct/237/cat/39
This has Multi-point, centre weighted and spot metering together with 5-area, centre and spot focussing. The sensor is roughly the same size as that on prosumer SLRs and the lens, although fixed, is truly superb. If you can live without an optical ELF, it's well worth considering.

I know I will shock some people but I'm gonna say a Pentax. For that kind of money you can get a K110 with a nice lens. Compared to other cameras in this price range, this camera has dof preview and mirror lockup and the other features you are looking for. No it does not come with a rechargeable batt. but for about $50 you can get a good set of 2700s and a charger by Powerex. 6megs are plenty. B&H out of NY City is very trustworthy. No gimmicks or hidden prices. Scott Kelby recomends B&H in his book on Dig. Photograhy. Check it out. (The K110 has shake reduction)

Look into a used (Nikon) D50? It has all those features, and should be going for less now that the D40 + D40x are out...

I'd go with the Pentax K110D or a K100D which also has in camera shake reduction. There are plenty of lenses available and both are very solid in build and performance.

Re: Searching for DSLR <$800 with spot metering and autofocus >3 pt.
How about considering the Sony A100 price drops from $599 to $699. Rated 9.5 in Pixalo. 10mg, multipoint AF, Super Steady Shot built into camera not the lenses. Great entry level camera, many, many Minolta lenses available reasonably priced. And if you decide to upgrade to A700 most assessories can be used with exception to the batteries. The will also be a Pro Model available sometime in early 08...
