OK, when I see a Nikon D300 for $899, or equivalent to £450 I start to get excited. Now what do I need to add to this amount to get true cost in to UK ??

We start with 17.5% VAT & my understanding is 6.7% on camera lenses.... is it same for cameras ??. Then we have P&P. Is there anything else missing ?? Does the above exlcude tax, which is still applicable to exports ??

don't buy nikon gear from the usa. comes with a USA only warranty.

well u take the cost. add the shipping. then add on a % which is the import duty (not sure what this value* is as it varies - apparently there are 14,000 different categories). Then add on VAT. oh and the shipping company may charge a brokerage fee anaw.


*Import Duty is usually percentage based. It averages at between about 5% and 9% - but with extremes in some cases between nil and 85%.

A quick check at B&H should have shown the true $ price for the D300 :- Nikon | D300 SLR Digital Camera (Camera Body) | 25432 | B&H

£1799 ... a tad more than $899

There are several US retailers/resellers pulling the same trick - maybe they're owned by the same people! Most are in NY, but not all. It's always worth checking the feedback sites before getting too excited, and if the prices are much different from B&H or Adorama then suspect something fishy.
