Re: Thinking of small P&S...

Sorry Jack, can't help, don't know nuffink about Fuji stuff ... plus that's one long list you're wanting ppl to go thru' for you

Cheap compacts are a dime a dozen now, I should think. I'd suggest you pick your favourite make, then choose a current popular model. Maybe have a look in a photo magazine for suggestions

Re: Thinking of small P&S...

I think you need to decide if you want a veiwfinder or just an LCD screen before you go too far down the line of picking a compact. One of the reasons I've not upgraded my old Coolpix 885 is that most modern ones only have an LCD, and a viewfinder is at the top of my list as a desirable feature.

The fuji F30/31 always got good press, but no viewfinder.

Canon still provide a viewfinder on some of their models, as do Sony.

Think what you want from a compact and consider a used one if it can give you more features than a modern one - often the newer models are full of gimmicks that are of limited or no real use. Check out the Canon Powershots/600 series and Ixus that have now been superceeded.

If you are not bothered by only having an LCD, the choice is greater.

Re: Thinking of small P&S...

Samsung L80/85 is pretty darn good, 8mp, small and quite rare in compacts, quite nice looking.

Amazon, leather case, £90

My girlfriend has one, it's sharp and gives quite good exposures - I'll try to get a couple of examples into this thread later.

Re: Thinking of small P&S...

Thanks guys, and Graham, I have no qualms about not viewfinder, this would just be something with decent IQ when I didn't want to lug my D50 around

Re: Thinking of small P&S...

I have just re-acquired,from my brother,my Olympus 5060 which is comparable to the Nikon 5400 mentioned previously[I think].It is not 'compact' as in fits in a pocket but it is a lot smaller and lighter than a DSLR so I take it when I go cycling. It has a 27-115mm lens,5MP,shoots Raw/Tiff/Jpeg,rotating rear screen. The only thing that I miss from a DSLR is the through the lens viewfinder. If you go to my 'gallery' these pics were all taken with the 5060:
"Ballamory"
"Last resting place"
"Duart Castle"
"Fingals Cave"
"Lighthouse"

Re: Thinking of small P&S...

Thanks guys, essentially I did mean a compact, as in fit in pocket, I already have a bridge camera, but thanks for the suggestions, and John (water) the shots with the Olympus are beautiful, especially "Lighthouse"

Re: Thinking of small P&S...

What about this :-
Brand New Fuji Finepix F31FD Digital Camera (fujifilm) on eBay, Digital Cameras, Photography (item 330157719755 end time 29-Aug-07 22:47:56 BST)

Has ISO3200

I had the earlier F10 & it was a cracking camera .. also ISO1600 which proved very handy .... one here for under budget :- FUJI F10 FinePix (6.3MP) DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA ~19X ZOOM on eBay, Digital Cameras, Photography (item 180152052598 end time 28-Aug-07 01:08:03 BST)

Might buy one myself at that price
