What is the best dSLR camera out there right now?

I'm interested in photography and I want to know what is the best quality dSLR out there right now? I'm a beginner, so I probably would need something that is user-friendly, but also the best of its kind. My price range would be anything from $600-2000. If you could recommend anything for me, that would be great!

I would also like to know, how can you tell a good quality camera from an okay one?

Re: What is the best dSLR camera out there right now?

Welcome to Pixalo jhonmartinvish

I've moved your post here as I think it is a more suitable forum.

All of the main camera brands will give you more than adequate quality for your needs. If you look at the similar questions that have been asked here you will see the most common advice is to handle different cameras to see how the controls are accessed and changed and how the menu system is laid out.

The one to choose is the one that feels the most comfortable and has the most logical menu set up for you.

Personally I don't like small cameras as I find them too fiddly and they tend to have controls via a touch screen due to the lack of space on the camera body. I prefer to have a button or thumbwheel to change settings rather than a touchscreen.

There isn't really a best but there may be one that will be best for you. You need to try to identify the features you need then compare camera specifications against your needs. A lot of internet and magazine reviews can also help to highlight the importants features.

+1

Best for me for my first dSLR was a Sigma SD10 giving 3MP against all others 6-8MP, no JPGs (RAW only), no Scene Modes (just simple controls). But it did have the ability to take rechargeable AAs, +/- 3.0 Exposure Compensation (most others only offered 2.0) and an external power connector (to allow power packs to be connected). And the pics it gave? Wonderful! (and still does though I only use it for IR nowadays)

Re: What is the best dSLR camera out there right now?

Don't forget to factor in the cost of your lenses, if you blow your whole budget on a top end DSLR and then have to put a poor quality lens on you will be wasting your time and money. Maybe worth looking for a package which has a good all round lens to start with.

Try before you buy and then buy what you can reasonable afford, not forgetting you might like a couple of lenses eventually.

Good luck!

Agree with what Dabs said. Reviews will only tell you so much, get your hands around the prospective candidates before you buy. For instance I'm left handed but the majority of the reviewers will be right handed

I'm astonished that if you are a wedding photographer you don't know what camera to buy, or that you don't have one already.

I think that you are just another spammer and if you continue to insult our members with these inane questions or spam our forums again I'll ban you.

It is insulting to our membership for a professional wedding photographer to post this sort of junk and then spam the forums with a link that I removed.

This is not the first time this has happened and on the previous occasion (with a different pro) the members were led on a merry dance before I sussed him out. That was not going to happen again.

Thank you. The only thing I deleted was the hyperlink to his web site as this breaks Pixalo rules where links to personal web sites are not permitted in posts. In this instance, no text was removed so you have seen what was written.

It's hard to recommend anything for your needs. I know that 550D was quite good camera for the price a while ago. I'm not sure if this camera is still being sold. It has photo and video function. Good quality and good price.

All the best

Re: What is the best dSLR camera out there right now?

If you really want to take good photos, stop worrying about whether you buy a Canon, Nikon, Olympus etc (they all make good cameras!) and start reading some of the many books about HOW TO USE those cameras to get the best results. The camerais just a tool, the results are primarily down to the person using it IMHO. :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Re: What is the best dSLR camera out there right now?

Hmm I think he was quite obviously a spammer and deserved to be deleted. If that is the quality of wedding photographer in Boston, I could make quite a killing out there! For a so called 'pro' to be asking if he should buy Canon or Nikon, and also ask what model to buy, is so clearly a spam post its not worth the time and effort replying......though I have just spent more time and effort saying why I wont!
Well done Dabhand, keep up the good work. No one minds helping out genuine people, but not numpty's trying to get people to follow a link!

His IP address was in India. Not the first time we have had a pro wedding photographer based in the West asking beginner questions but originating from India and posting links to web sites in the UK or USA. I guess they pay the spammers to do what we see here.

Re: What is the best dSLR camera out there right now?

So ignoring the stupid spammer - thanks to a burglary, I am now in virigin DSLR territory because they took my entire pentax kit inlcuding the old film body

I still have my Fuji HS20 bridge camera so at least I have something to use while we do the insurance dance.
However, once get paid out, I have a decision to make so I'm goign to start researching now. I'm thinking a move to Canon or Nikon mainly because they are more ubiquitious and there are more high quality generic accessories available but I did like my Pentax.
Things I liked about the Pentax were the many hand controls, so I didnt need to use menus to change settings, the hand feel. what I dint like - it was pretty darn heavy.

I will clearly need to go into the shops hold cameras etc (i walk past two shops twice a day ) but I'm wondering what others would recommend with the above minimal requirements?

It sounds as if you pretty well know what you're doing Don't ignore Sony - they are creeping along with some interesting new features but you won't get the range that you will with Canon and Nikon.

PS I have the HS20 too, awesome little camera, have you tried the 360 degree pano?

Re: What is the best dSLR camera out there right now?

Sorry to hear your news Willow. I guess that the old advice still applies. Narrow your choice to a couple from both of the makers and handle them to see how the settings are accessed and changed. The one to choose is the one that is easiest for you and has the most logical menu system.

With regard to the weight, maybe a different approach to the strap is the answer. My D700 + 24-70 f2.8 weighs in at 2.2kg, but since I swapped my strap I hardly know I'm carrying it

With regard to the weight, maybe a different approach to the strap is the answer. My D700 + 24-70 f2.8 weighs in at 2.2kg, but since I swapped my strap I hardly know I'm carrying it
