Re: 100mm

a lot,. the 70-300 with IS is really nice if you can spring the $

the greater the zoom range the more compromises the lens designer had to make,. so 200/28 is ~7x zoom and the 300/70 is ~4x zoom, I don't know about the specific lenses you mention, typically the less zoom range it covers the better the image quality (no doubt there are a few rare exceptions)

it does of course depend on how you use your camera, if you don't want to take pictures of stuff far away and you really don't like changing lenses then you might want to consider the zoom with the longer range (or something similar)

I think this is the most important point to think of when making your choice... I'd also take into consideration what lenses you may or may not have, something you havn't mentioned.

Re: 100mm

Reiterating what Sonsey said, the most important aspect is covering the range that you need. Do you already have a wide angle lens covering the range down to 28mm? If not AND you like taking pictures of landscapes and the like, you really should consider the 28-200 but if you already have a lens suitable for that sort of photography, it is likely that you will appreciate the extra telephoto distance of the 70-300mm.

The lesn you are looking at comes in two forms, non-USM or USM. The USM version has an Ultrasonic Motor which gives faster and quieter autofocus and is often worth paying the difference. I had that lens when I first got a DSLR and it gave me some very good pictures so I am sure you would be very happy with it.

Go by your needs rather than any difference in quality of pictures as they will both give you decent pictures.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: 100mm

The only lense I have is the kit lense that came with the 350D: 18-55

I am into a landscape photography, but I was thinking along the lines that since I have an 18-55 even if it is a kit lense, I could go for 75-300 I don't think the difference between 75 and 55 would make a big difference!

Just thinking out loud...

It's your thought's that count

If I was in your position I'd do the same thing... I would only go for the 28-200 if you really hate changing lenses.

Re: 100mm

I agree, 28mm isn't really wide enough for landscape photography on a 350D anyway, so you'd probably find you ended up using the 18-55mm for a lot of those shots regardless.

Thumbs up Re: 100mm

Ok I am back... and I got my lens finally... but let me share what happened with me...

After my last post, I was convinced that I wanted and needed the 75-300 so I head out to the store and I got me the 75-300 and came back home... It was after dark and I wanted to try out my new lens... so I started to shoot in the house... the first thing that bothered me in the house was that I had to stay away from my subjects (I could not get wide)...

So I kept thinking about the thing the whole next day until the evening until I said that 75-300 will not do. So I went out to the store and exchanged it for the 28-200

I should let you know that I am very much happy with this one and feel satisfied

Thanks for everyone who helped out, especially in the earlier thread where I was told to get the 28-200 in the first place!

Re: 100mm

so long as you got what you wanted,

if you want to shoot people or objects indoors then the 75-300 is probably not what you want,. the 18-55 kit lens you have is probably your best option for that (or 50 1.8 etc)
