11-18mm or 18-200mm

Recently purchased a Canon EOS 400D which came with a 18-55mm lens. Main interest is landscape shots and have now shortlisted this to the above. Any recommendations gratefully received - or even any better suggestions.

Thanks,

Bill.

Re: 11-18mm or 18-200mm

Many memebers - myself included - have the Sigma 10-20. It is an awsome lens and excellent value for money.

The 18-200 is generally thought to be the ideal walkabout all-round lens, and again the Sigma gets good press, but the 10-20 would be better for landscape work or if you have limited space in urban environments.

Best way would be to go to a shop and try them on the camera.

Re: 11-18mm or 18-200mm

Well I'm gonna play devils advocate & say that wider is not always better for landscape shots At 10mm anything more than 30 ft away seems to dissappear way way in to the distance through the viewfinder. That said, if you are able to visualise a shot with something very prominent in the foreground, it can work for that kind of shot.

If you have a look in my gallery you'll see the dramatic effects you can get at 10mm ....if that's your cup of tea, then go for it. If you are more aligned to capturing scenery more as your eye sees it, then the 18-200 might offer you more scope & without doubt more opportunities for shots, as you have a wider focal range to play with

Graham is right though re shooting in urban scenarios .... 10 mm is pretty handy in tight spots

Thanks for the advice guys. I should perhaps have been more specific in advising that it is country rather urban landscapes where my interest lies. Having now looked at 100's of pics in the gallery I can see the benefit of the 10-20 working in limited spaces. It would have made my decision easier if the pics advised of the lens used on each occasion - or have I not looked in the right place?

Re: 11-18mm or 18-200mm

I'll second Dave's warning about 10mm. It seems like a good idea to begin with but there are very few landscape shots where it works. I've got a 16~35mm for my film camera, which is the equivalent of the 10~20 on a 400D, and I've shot about two landscapes with it at the wide setting.

Generally speaking, I find that 24mm (about 16mm on the 400D) is the widest I ever use for landscapes.
