Re: 16gb CF Card
These were on offer a while back - £17.99 I think.
Even at this price they are still good value. 7dayshop.com - Online Store |

NOT to decry larger size memory cards, but a question, as I have had problems?... I have a fairly good quality 4gb "Kingston" make CF card... and I had problems with it... Overheating. Camera was EOS 350 D, in RAW format, maybe its a thing with just that camera, but in use in a hot climate, in Spain, whilst taking some shots of Dolphins (there is still one in my pictures I think?...) on "Burst" mode, after taking about 20 to 30 shots in quick succession to catch the action I got Error 5, (?) card-not-ready.... I took the card out, and it was decidedly WARM to the touch.... I had started with an empty card and it was about 1 to 2gb full at this stage, so it had been in good use over the last hour or so. I swapped out to a smaller 2gb card and continued shooting... thankfully, I had a supply of smaller cards with me. Since then, I have experimented a bit, to find out what went wrong... (Enquiring mind... was it me doing something wrong or the camera?...) After the card had had time to cool, it went back in the camera, and I have not had serious problems with it since, except the above problem... I replicated the conditions a couple of times, by deliberately shooting many shots in burst mode in WARM places to see if the error re-appeared.... and borrowed a friends 4gb card (different make...SanDisk) to compare in case it was just a faulty memory... Sure enough, on all occasions, eventually I got the error. Ok, so my conclusions... EITHER, there is an inherent fault with larger memory card whereby they cannot dissipate heat quickly when used in this form, OR, I am overtaxing the assets by pushing camera and card to the limits... I would be interested to know what the other regulars on this forum think, as I have not since been able to ask such a concentrated collection of people who know..... Is it me?... am I expecting too much?... To solve the problem for me, I have kept to maximum 2gb card size, and swapped out frequently.... Some may say that is a time waste, but remembering how many negatives you could fit on a spindle and still get the back of the camera shut in 35mil days, at close to 200 shots in RAW, its still plenty.

Re: 16gb CF Card
I use mostly 8GB cards and rattle very large raw files into them at up to 9FPS with no issues. It may be a faulty camera but it's also supposed to be an issue with cheap or fake branded cards.

Re: 16gb CF Card
I read somewhere that if there is no serial number on the card its a fake, but I have also read that some serial numbers are fakes! so we are back to square one!

Re: 16gb CF Card
I have a kingston 16gb card. The first one died on me after just the second time of use. The one i've got now, did gave me a problem a few weeks ago as well. Same thing as the first card, only I've used it since without problems.
I don't know what it is. But I must admit that my next card purchase won't be another kingston. It will definitely be a sandisk. |

Re: 16gb CF Card
I have a 16Gb Kingston and have not had any problems at all. I have shot high speed sequences at 6.5fps and regularly shot to the buffer. Now that I have a 5D MkII I have used it extensively (a 2Gb card would be useless in a camera of this size!) and it has not let me down at all, including shooting video clips at HD resolution and 30fps.
I have never known the card to feel anything more than tepid so if yours was feeling very warm then I can only guess it is either a faulty card or it is getting hot in the camera itself. I am looking out for another couple of these so if anyone sees a sudden price crash again, do let me know! I am being a bit tight really as 7dayshop are already doing them at £27.99 which is pretty good. Trouble is I paid £17.99 so they sound expensive ![]() Cheers, Rob
