re: 170-500 Sigma lens

I had one which was not stabilised it was ok and gave some good IQ however i sold it for what i paid for it and am now contemplating getting a 1.7 tc for my Nikon 70 200 2.8 vr seeing what others have acheived with this set up Or saving up for the stabilised version which i think is 150 500

Your thread title is '150-500 Sigma lens', but your post says 'has anyone used a Sigma 170-500 Sigma lens'.

Which one are you talking about?

I would consider the 150-500 with the stablizer, but I too think I will go with the Nikkor 70-200 + an extension or save up for the 80-400 VR. I HAD the Sigma 170-500 before and I di dnot like the color it gave me. The overall experience with that lens was just so-so for me.

I'll change the thread title then

I think that the 170-500 is an old design and is not as good as the later 150-500. I'm not sure that you would actually get a recommendation for the 170-500 as at best it is only average.

Re: 170-500 Sigma lens

I've used both. The newer 150 is quite good - and the stabilisation works well (but is noisy and spooks people in bird hides) - the older 170 is quite poor.

The 50-500mm lacks stabilisation but is sharper in my experience.

Don't rule out the Tamron 200-500mm - it's as good as the 50-500mm and lighter!

Good advice Oy I've also seen a lot of good reviews for the old 50-500.
