I think you should take a look over here to see the major bugbear that quite a few people seem to be having with the Mk III.

'Tis a pity because I had, at one point, seriously considered investing in a Mk III system for those occasions when I need to delve into the land ISO1600 and above - but I won't do so with such a seemingly flaky AF system.

It really is quite a serious glitch so soon after launch. I wonder what damage limitation they will come up with?

Steph, I can only hope for Canon's sake that a firmware update will address the issue - if it turns out to be an electrical/mechanical fault then god help them... I'd hate to be in their shoes for such a product recall

Viking, I was in the same boat as you....after reading some issues with AF system I was completely put off.....just hoping someone here had one so I could measure the defect for myself. I have had conflicting reviews. One person says its fine and another says its crap....I would lean more to the crap one as it is possible a canon rep could be delving into the world of photographic forums to defend a design fault. I would seriously buy one tomorrow if I knew the problem could be rectified with a firmware upgrade. thanks for everyones thoughts....still like to here from someone here who has one....or if not used one would be good.

Do you know I had a bit of a feeling about this when I read of the initial issue on the pre production body. I don't know why but I couldn't quite believe that Canon would release a review sample with this issue so close to release date and expect them to have it solved/corrected 100% by then.

There was also so much hipe that they sort of backed themselves into a corner with setting the release date and building up demand that if they had held it back it would have been very bad overall, not that releasing problematic cameras is good!!! Either way I really do hope that its a simple firmware update to fix it although as they did with the 24-105L lenses, its not beyond Canon to do a recall if required. If the latter is the only solution there is going to be a few brassed off professional shooters out there!!

A lot of the picture teams at many newspapers in the US placed bulk orders for Mk III cameras, not to mention that Getty and AP got the lion's share of the initial shipments for their staff photographers.

This could wind up costing Canon dearly - moreso because they touted the AF system of the Mk III as being superior to that of any other previous camera; the sheer complexity of setting up the AF system clearly isn't helping when it comes to troubleshooting this issue, but folk such as Rob Galbraith are not newbies when it comes to this sort of thing and are (thankfully) reporting the issue as it stands.

I agree that normally it would be an issue (ignoring the actual complexity of setting up) thankfully with this model being aimed at serious shooters and professionals at least we can be thankful in the fact that these very users are the ones that are likely to know what they are talking (and complaining about) and Canon needs to listen to them. Like you say people like R.Galbraith covering the issue in depth and without malice goes a good way to making Canon
