I have a Magicstor 2.2 gig plus CF type II micridrive card that has decided not to work anymore....

it was fine for a while and took about 30 shots on it one day and it locked up,

put it in any device and it just clicks away and is unreadable by all my machines , Nikon D70 , Epson P2000 viewer , card readers in the PC etc.

anyone know if there are fixable,
either with a small screwdriver or a large hammer,
cuz at the moment it is useless

Don't say that....I've got a 4GB microdrive which I don't want to have to replace . How old is yours & how much use would you say it has had ? If it's anyhting like laptop hard drives, they are disposable items these days.

We're not allowed to use microdrives for this very reason - small moving parts and sand = death to the card.

They do fail occasionally.

it actually failed quite a while back, but havnt had the heart to take it to bitz yet, as they cost so much , especialy when i bought it,

i had used it for at least 4 months and took over 2k shots on it b4 i went to Oz, and then the first day out i took a few shots in the Harbour and it locked up,
i had to go to the nearest camera shop and by a half gig CF card just so i could take more pix,

i would have gone mental if it had been at the end of the trip and full of pix, just imagine !!!!!!,
this was the main reason i bought the Epson P2000 ( 40 gig portable ) , and upload even during the day so nothing stays on the card, or is at least duplicated for backup reasons

Once you take it apart it'll be stuffed - you might resurrect it, but I wouldn't trust it ever again on a job.

One of the reason I only use the realatively expensive Lexar-Pro and Sandisk Extreme cards is the unconditional warranty they offer.
I carry 2x 2Gb cards per camera and 8x 512 cards as spares should the others die on me. And a portable HD to download to on the move.

If you search here or google you will see why the macicstor drives are so cheap. Very unreliable.

I'd use the hammer - unless you can send it back for exchange/refund. Must have a good case for that as you can find plenty of similar faults to back your claim.

It sound like a hell of a lot of money buying a card for £150, but in film terms it's incredibly cheap - on the 2gb cards I have, I've taken about 8000 images so far (we had 1Gb cards beforehand), that equates to about 220 rolls of film at about £6 a roll, that's £1320. Add processing costs (assuming you get it done professionally at about £8 per roll) that's another £1760.
So before you've even printed anything you're up to about £3k.

£3k compared to £500 for 4x 2Gb cards. It's a lot cheaper than it used to be.

Don't know why but for some reason I thought you'd have a good bit more than that with you.

a 2Gb card will take about 90 RAW images, so that's about 360 split between 4 cards. The 512s give me another 200 ish. The 40 Gb HD takes too many to count.

I seldom take more than 300 images on a job unless I'm away on a single job that lasts for a couple of days, and even then there'll be times at the end of each day when I can download to the laptop and do some processing and transmitting.

Agreed. I was tempted, last year, but I read around and although cheap they were generally reckoned to be unreliable. Made in China. I bought a 2gb Hitachi instead. As said..get the hammer out and put it down to experience.
