300 mm af-i

I knew of the existence of AF-I lenses but have never seen one. Until now, I spotted this on craigslist here in my state:

https://annarbor.craigslist.org/pho/5469413586.html

$990 for a 20-24 year old F2.8 300mm Lens.. Does that seem high?

Im thinking about offering $650 for it.. at $1000 I might as well get a 300 F4 with better lens coatings..

Just interested in input here. - Am I overlooking something excellent or is this guy asking the moon?

Re: 300 mm af-i

Seems expensive to me. Over here you see used AF-S 300mm F4 examples in excellent condition going in stores for between 580 - 680, usually with 6 months warranty. check out the MPB website for typical (although not necessarily the cheapest) UK prices.

Re: 300 mm af-i

I do not know the particular lens but lens development has come some way forward in recent years. Also modern lenses for DSLR's have coating on internal elements because a sensor is more reflective than film. It would probably pay to choose a more modern lens. Having said that a 300mm f2.8 is an attractive idea though 500mm f2.8 would be nice. The problem is I would not use it that often and it would be very expensive.

Re: 300 mm af-i

Opposed to Graham's remark the price doesn't seem too high for a f/2.8 lens but checkout the AF-I reliability. Personally unless I needed the f/2.8 for winter use, I would stick with the 300 f/4, which is quiet and mine focusses fast enough - only a tad slower than my 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S. The weight alone of these older top end lenses would be enough to discourage me for using it as a lens to take with me on hikes.

Re: 300 mm af-i

Nikonians says it's a real good lens. But.... No parts for repair any more if it breaks. No discussion of suitable pricing tho
