55-250 v 18-200

Hi everyone!
I need some help!!! I am seriously driving myself mad (and my long suffering boyfriend!) about this decision. Do I buy the canon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 to compliment my 18-55mm kit lens or go for the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6??? Both IS. I'm trying to make the decision without thinking of cost and thinking purely of image quality. I like taking portraits (friends' weddings and friends children) and travel photos (I'm off to New York on Saturday but I also enjoy countryside/mountain shots). Please help!!!

HI, HAVE YOU ALSO CONSIDERED THE TAMRON 18-270MM THIS IS ALSO A VERY GOOD ALL PURPOSE WALK ABOUT LENS.

I HAVE ONE, WHICH I USE WITH MY CANON 7D, I AM VERY PLEASED WITH IT

Re: 55-250 v 18-200

There seems little in it quality-wise and I guess if you got the 18-200 you'd be able to leave the 18-55 behind on your trip! But then I might be tempted to go for the Tamron for the extra 70mm.......

Re: 55-250 v 18-200

Okay here is my take on it. If money is not the main issue then this is what you have to ask yourself. Do I like changing lenses? The "reach" between 200 and 250 is of no big importance. So the question really is on the wider end. You already have an 18-55 so adding a 55-250 would make sense to you if you want to have a telephoto zoom lens to get some reach that your 18-55 cannot give you. On the other hand, if you take your 18-55 off your body and attach an all purpose 18-200 onto the body then you really don't have to change lenses at all. There are lots of very good all purpose 18-200 or 18-250 lenses out there by various brands. Canon, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina but if you have a Canon and you are okay with its price then a Canon lense with IS would be best. However, if you don't mind changing lenes then by all means carry two lenses with you in your camera bag and swap the lenses when you need it.
For me, and this is my pesonal opinion, the difference bewteen Canon IS Zoom lenses are not huge, not unless you are talking about a fixed aperature lens verus an non fixed aperture on..or between a zoom lens and a prime lens. However, even then for most of us it is not a huge difference at all.
