Re: Advice on this lens

Nope

That lens has a screw mount not Canon EF mount.

Re: Advice on this lens

Sorry my fault in not mentioning that it comes with a 42mm screw adapter to attach it to a canon body.

Just need to know if it will damage the camera or not.

Re: Advice on this lens

Perhaps it would fit but looking at your gear I wonder why you would bother especially as you need manual focus and aperture. The 70 - 300 IS lens you have is really good and only slightly slower than this one. The IS will more than make up for the speed.

Re: Advice on this lens

Bin it and buy either a up to date lens second hand or new for the quality camera you have! most old lenses will work to a point if you have the right mount but........... then you wont be getting the best out off your camera, sorry for being blunt!

Re: Advice on this lens

To dismiss M42 lenses on the basis that they're old is somewhat sweeping - I've managed excellent shots (published too) with an "out of date" Zenitar 16mm Fisheye. It may be all manual but the results are certainly not dated!

Re: Advice on this lens

I have to agree with Markulous - 110%! Are you kidding me, M42 has some of the BEST lenses EVER made. There are lots of GEMS out there with M42 mount lenses! They give you, sharpness, rich colors that many modern lenses simply cannot match, very nice Bokeh, aperture and all at a cost that is a fraction of what you will pay for for modern lenses! The drawbacks ?
1) You will need an adaptor. You lucky person you - Canon camera body is perfect for using other mounts. Make sure you check that you have focus at infinity when you go check out the lens with the adaptor on your camera. IT WILL not damage your camera if you mount everything normally and correctly.
2) You have to manual focus which depending on vision can be a challenge but you will improve after about 1-2 weeks of practice
3) You have to manually fill in your EXIF if you care about that kind of thing.
4) THE MOST important drawback. You HAVE to know what to look for when you buy a used lens. Fugus, hotspots, dirt and all that bad stuff. If you can get a clean lens and a good adpator and you look at this as a hobby then M42 lens will open a world to you that you never would have imagined.
5) M42 mount lenses are addicting. Once you buy one and see how wonderful they are you will be back on your local buy and sell or on ebay each month looking for more deals. People usually have a a small collection of these lenses.
Cheers

Re: Advice on this lens

Oh and also there is a Flickr group dedicated to the M42 mount. Quite a few chaps in the UK belongs to that group.
Cheers
