advice on which lens to buy.

hi all,

i can't make my mind up on which of the following 2 lenses i should opt for if either maybe someone out here may suggest another....the 2 are

1.Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED

2.Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED

i already have the nikon 70-200mm f2.8 vr lens and the 18-200vr and i know the latter would be not much use in low light say in a church, however i intend to use the 18-200 for my travels,so i reckon i will need something from 70mm downwards on an f2.8...what would people reccomend to buy next...hopefully looking at wedding courses if that helps at all

thanks.....

Re: advice on which lens to buy.

All depends on what body ur using i would suggest D300 and under a 17 55 which i have and find the best thing since sliced bread or if ur using a D700 or D3 a 24 70, Bearing in mind if ur using a D3 or D700 if you get a 17 55 it drops down to about 6 mega pix.
I also have a 70 200 and the 18 200.

Re: advice on which lens to buy.

I have the D3 body and the 24-70mm f2.8 is the lens that is most likely to be on the camera most often. Other than that, I used the 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 - but thats just because of the type of photography I do now (low light music gigs etc)

Re: advice on which lens to buy.

As Muscle says, it depends on the camera. If you're using an APS-C body, then there's no contest, go for the 17~55. If you have, or intend to get, a full frame camera, then the 24~70 might be rather more appropriate.

That said, I own a lot of lenses and the most useful for 35mm film is the Sigma 17~35. As I simply can't bring myself to pay out for a full-frame DSLR, I often carry my Eos 5, with the Sigma fitted, alongside my DSLRs. There aren't that many shots calling for nearly 180 degrees FOV but, when they come along, nothing else will do.

Re: advice on which lens to buy.

If your plan is to go full frame in the near future, then go for the 24-70mm. But if not for a long while, then definitely go for the 17-55mm. It is not as bulky as the 24-70mm and is a very good lens as well.

Re: advice on which lens to buy.

Yes I have the 70 200vr and the 18 200 and the 17 55, if ur just out and about take the 18 200, I lugged mine to Dubai last year and glad i didnt take the 70 200vr in 45c plus
Lugging mine around for 2 hours does make your arm ache, so if you want the range and no bust arm keep the 18 200 I also took the 50mm 1.8 now replaced by my 50mm 1.4.
I also took a CF tripod and a SB800.

Muscle 750 has hit the nail on the head. The 18-200 makes a great travel lens. I bought my Sigma 18-200 specifically for this purpose and use it with my D70s body. I later replaced it with a Nikkor as I got one at a really good price, but it only sees any action when I don't want to lug my normal kit around.

Re: advice on which lens to buy.

As mentioned above. I wouldn't sell the 18-200, cause it is a great travel lens.
