Advice seeked on lens

Hi guys

Just joined the forum and posted in the welcome section.

I have just been given a Canon 350D for my birthday and was wondering if I could get some advice on a lens for mainly motorbike racing. I also love wildlife too but bikes come first! As always there is a budget and its around the £100 mark.

Please tell me if I'm in cloud cuckoo land if that budget won't get me what I'm wanting!!

I don't know much about Canon's but I know it'll be hard sourcing any lens for £100 or under for any SLR.

Re: Advice seeked on lens

Not quite £100 but check out the Sigma 70-300mm APO version (that's important, the APO). Very good lens for the price now going for under £150. See the example shots section and the reviews section for stuff about it!

Re: Advice seeked on lens

I'd second Jack's advice, the APO lens is well worth going for as it's excellent value for money. Having said that, the non-APO 70-300 is not a total disaster (I know as I've got one!) and is within your budget

Re: Advice seeked on lens

The good news is, it's perfectly possible to get good shots of motorbikes with lenses in the £100 - £150 price range but you do have to work a bit harder and it will limit your options.

I've been to several circuits and they all have places where you can stand close enough to the action, these places are popular and fill up quickly on raceday. My advice is to go on practice or qualifying days when it's quieter, wander round the circuit, try stuff out and decide where you'd like to be on raceday. Then get there early, get your pitch and stay put.

The smaller the event the more opportunity you'll have to get some shots of the bikes / riders /garages etc. off the track club meets are especially good.

With the aperture on those lenses good light will be necessary before some shots are possible but you can always get a good panning shot with practice and they're really effective if done well.

Most of all I find that if you really enjoy the racing it's worth putting the camera down and watching it from time to time.

cheers

Dan

Re: Advice seeked on lens

Good advice there ^^^

Something like the Sigma 70-300mm is an ideal first tele-zoom. I really enjoyed mine 4 or 5 years ago when I first got into DSLR. Yes it's a bit slow both in aperture and focusing but definitely capable of decent results in the right conditions.

Re: Advice seeked on lens

Thanks guys for the useful advice and I'm definitely going to give the Sigma a go!

Dan.....I love my bikes, especially when I get the chance to get out on mine (not the best of weather lately!!)..but unfortunately living in Cornwall means that there isn't much I can get to, we make an annual pilgrimage to Thruxton as this is the closest main race circuit for us, usually for BSB but Moto GP is my first love!!! I've spent plenty of times sat there watching leaving the boyfriend to the picture taking

Am going to try going to some Trials events as there are much more of those locally and seeing what kind of shots I can get!
