After some advice on my lens strategy/choice of new lens???

Right, I know I have kind of covered this before in an old topic but I keep going full circle and looking for some advice/opinions on which direction to choose. Long and short of it is I have a rather large gap in my lens range that needs filling will a walk around/holiday lens but don't know what zoom range to target for my choice. My current lenses are:

- Samyang 8mm fisheye
- Canon 50mm f1.8
- Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG APO Macro
- Sigma 170-500mm f5-6.3 DG APO

Basically the options I am considering are:

1: Buy a medium length zoom to add to the others such as the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 OS HSM or Canon 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM. Then possibly in the long run replace the Sigma 70-300mm with a 70-200mm f2.8.

2: Buy a super length zoom such as the Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 OS or one of the 3 Tamron options (18-200/250/270). This would then allow me to sell the Sigma 70-300mm to recoup some money as I would have this range covered.

Now option 1 will probably give me a better quality product and better results, but I may want to take a longer lens on holiday with me as well, option 2 will be more versatile so only 1 lens needed on holiday but the quality of the pictures may not be as good.

What are your opinions on what route I should go down?

If you want a general purpose / holiday lens to minimise the amount of kit you are traveling with, I don't think you would regret going for option 2. I don't think you would see any quality differences in 99% of your shots, and you will get the bonus of having a much wider short end range than you currently have. The Tamron 18-270 gets good press and Silkstone has often praised it on here. Check out some of his shots that he has taken with it.

I use an 18-200 as a holiday lens and it does the job very nicely.

Thanks for the response Dabhand, out of interest which 18-200 do you use? Can you show me some sample results of what can be achieved with it?

Re: After some advice on my lens strategy/choice of new lens???

I use a Nikkor 18-200vr. Not a lot of use for you!

All of these shots were taken with it

However, before I got the Nikkor, I had a Sigma 18-200. Just the basic non stabilised version. If I had not got the Nikkor for a very good price, I would have quite happily kept the Sigma

All of these shots were taken with the Sigma

Le Touquet - Pixalo Photo Gallery

And here I've really pushed it

As far as I remember, all of the above shots were taken with my trusty old Nikon D70s. 6MP can get you good results!

Re: After some advice on my lens strategy/choice of new lens???

The Tamron 18-270 sounds good and there are some good sample shots about, however money is tight (looking at 200 or less ideally) and I only seem to be able to find the lens for sale new at a fair bit out of my budget.

So I think my choice will be limited to the 18-200 sigma (perhaps the OS version if I can get one at the right price) or the Tamron 18-200 or 250. Out of these the Sigma is the only one available with image stabilisation so I guess that would be my first choice?

Re: After some advice on my lens strategy/choice of new lens???

Ages ago a mag did a group test of 18-200 lenses and the Sigma 18-200 OS came second to the Nikkor.

You can still get the non-OS model for under 200 new, and the OS one for under 300, so a used OS model should be in budget.
