Anybody have any experience with a Nikon 16-85mm F3.5/5.6 VR?

Hi,
Does anybody have any experience with a Nikon 16-85mm F3.5/5.6 VR?

I was considering purchasing one as a 'walkabout lens' for when I'm out & about with the dog etc.

I've seen some mixed reviews on the net but would appreciate any comments for the forum, or indeed a alternative?

Thanks,
Steve

Using One-Stop prices, an extra 80 will get you the Nikkor 18-200vr - a far better walkabout general purpose lens.

I loved the 18-70 kit lens that I got with my D70s, but I like the 18-200 better.

You could also consider the Tamron 18-270 for under 400.

Thanks Graham,

The Tamron was on my shopping list(!) as a one stop holiday lens. I hadn't really considered it as a replacement for my current 18-55mm kit lens. But will now

I wonder if I can convince the missus that as I've made a potenial 400 saving I can put that towards some D-lites, well works with her and shoes

Ah - shoes v kit. Been there, but my Wife did not know that I bought a D300 a while back, or a D700 + the 14-24 f2.8 and the 24-70 f2.8 earlier this year

Ha ha!
Oh this sounds familiar. I called into Jessops a short while ago to take a look at a new tripod and come home with a D300 + 50mm f1.8 lens, oh and a couple of softboxes and maybe a remote release

I'm not sure if my wife is just very understanding or has just given up on me!

Re: Anybody have any experience with a Nikon 16-85mm F3.5/5.6 VR?

I've owned both the 16-85 VR and the 18-200 VR. The 16-85 I had was light years ahead of the 18-200 in IQ. I appreciate that I might have had a bad copy of the 18-200, but conversely I got some fantastic pictures from my 16-85, despite finding out only when I went to sell it on (having bought it second-hand) that the VR was defective....

I've always thought that vr/OS or whatever is wasted/unnecessary on shorter lenses. I've had some fantastic results with my Nikkor 18-200vr at 150 - 200mm and 1/10 sec hand held - and also some good results with a Sigma 10-20 with no stabilisation at 1/13 sec hand held.
