I have used the Sigma 800mm prime lens a while ago. They really are huge, heavy and awkward to use.
Using my 20D mounted on a tripod I managed to capture the photo below with the wee beastie.

800mm prime lens, the mind boggles, i just think of the extra baggage cost at the airport, the cost of a forklift to move it around. Still ok for wildlife ect but I would love to see you photograph a formula 1 car crossing the winning line

Yup sorry about that but you did make it too tempting to resist
I have to agree with you though, I would not personally buy such a lens as I would find it totally impractical and virtually impossible to transport. They are a lot of fun to try though and while its a massive learning curve to get a decent return from it, when you get it right the results are worth it
