I'm looking to buy a flash unit for my Nikon D80 and have been looking at the Nikon SB600 and SB800. Then the Metz 58-AF1 has come to my attention and I wanted to know if anyone has used a Metz unit and / or a 58-AF1.
So if you have any experiences that you would be willing to share, good or bad, I'd be very grateful. Thanks |

Re: Anyone got an opinion on Metz flash units?
Metz are very good flashguns, but I'm not sure if they will be completely compatible with all of the metering and control functions of the D80.

Re: Anyone got an opinion on Metz flash units?
What does the Metz offer over the SB600/SB800 and vice versa? Also how do the prices compare?
A point worth considering is that while the Metz maybe compatible with current range of Nikon DSLR's it may not stay in touch with future models due to programming of the cameras, the Nikon branded SB600/800 however is far more likely to be forward compatible. If you are likely to change/upgrade your camera body in the future this may also be a consideration in the decision

Re: Anyone got an opinion on Metz flash units?
Metz are great flash units and used to be the weapon of choice for most pros but now dedicated units offer so much more integration and the output has come on leaps and bounds that, except for huge hammerhead models, there is no advantage. I have no experience of the SB600 but I am sure it's great. I have 2 SB800s and they are almost flawless (low batt warning please). The Metz will not offer wireless remote operation or multi flash set ups with the D80.

Re: Anyone got an opinion on Metz flash units?
I'm not familiar with the metz range and I have not used them but I did read something a while back about their high end flashes that are totally compatable with canon an nikon ttl and wireless systems, they even have a usb port so that can be update with new firmware, pretty neat

Re: Anyone got an opinion on Metz flash units?
Thanks for all of that. Now all I have to do is work out what it all means. I guess I need a flash masterclass.

Re: Anyone got an opinion on Metz flash units?
I would say unless you know you want the metz flash then stick with the nikon stuff it's very good sb600 or sb800 with the 800 being a bit more powerful

Re: Anyone got an opinion on Metz flash units?
Anybody know wether a Metz 36AF-4 flashgun is compatible with a Canon eos 350D. I am looking for an inexpensive flash to boost the one on the camera
