Anyone tried these? Should I?

I'm looking for some lighting for a lightbox and small multi purpose studio (at last I've found a use for my attic room!) and saw these which seem seriously cheap.
So was wondering if anyone had tried them and should I?

Re: Anyone tried these? Should I?

The price is cheap enough - I've cheapest I've seen the stands going for alone is about 15 each.

I think the lights are the weak link. Might be OK for table top use but not much else. You should be able to fit more powerful bulbs, but beware the holders might not take the extra heat.

The brackets look like they are integral to the bulb holders, but I know you can buy brackets that will accept a conventional flashgun and a brolly for about 10 (before credit crunch) for the pair - brolly, silver or white, and a bracket.

You might be better off getting the stands, brackets and brollys and one or two cheap flashguns. This will be a bit dearer, but might be more flexible.

I'd suggest some research (which you have already started) before you buy.

Hmmm my Norton IS 2009 actually flags this link up as suspicious (Something to do with the ID protection and antiphishing filter), maybe nothing but just thought I'd mention it

Re: Anyone tried these? Should I?

Norton flags the link because of the addition of the ads.shoppingads.com part pixalo adds to the link.

As for the lighting setup, I'll follow this thread bacause I too am looking for a low cost basic lighting system.

Re: Anyone tried these? Should I?

Could they be 26w Low Energy blubs? That would make them akin to 200w (ish) normal wouldn't it? I never heard of 26w Low Energy blubs mind.....

Re: Anyone tried these? Should I?

Well it turns out they ARE low energy bulbs, each having the equivalent of 150w normal bulbs.
So I've ordered a set and will let you know if they are any good or complete crap.
I was gonna go down the Strobist route but the way that suitable flashguns have gone up in price recently it would have cost me three times as much at least. Strobist would be the way to go if I already had spare flash units lying around.
I'll post some more detailed info on the kit when I receive it, I'm still not sure whether the stands will hold other lights for a start.
Nick
