Re: Autofocus info needed....

Theres a switch on the lens, AF & M, switch to AF for autofocus or M for manual focusing

Not familiar with the D60, but you might also have a focus selector switch on the camera body too.

I donot see any such switch on my lens.May be you are talking about the canon version of the lens.Mine is a Nikon version.

Graham:
There is no such switch on D60 body. It's available in D80.

I am sure that this lens has an in built motor to autofocus in D60.But not sure how to do it.

Re: Autofocus info needed....

According to the Sigma web site, your lens should work on the D60

Sigma Imaging (UK) Ltd

You should not have to do anything to the lens or camera - it should just work.

Are you using manual mode and a small aperture?

Make sure the camera is switched off when you change lenses.

I found this in the FAQ's on the Sigma web site. might not apply to you, but...

Quote:
I can’t get my lens to autofocus.
If you have a DF (Dual Focus) lens, you will need to pull the clutch/focusing ring to activate the AF. See you lens’ instructions for further details.
If using a Nikon camera, the AF/MF switch is located on the camera body as opposed to on the lens, ensure you turn this switch to the AF position.

Re: Autofocus info needed....

The display panel asks me to change to lowest aperature if I use any other mode other than auto mode.So i have to move the aperature ring to the lowest and manual focus.

I checked the manual and its written AF works with Canon and Sigma camera but nothing mentioned for Nikon.I don't think sigma hasn't thought about nikon AF while giving the lens a nikon mount.

What do you say?

Re: Autofocus info needed....

If you have an aperture ring, it should be set on the smallest aperture - probably f22. However, when I looked at the lens on the Sigma web site, it did not appear to have an aperture ring.

Re: Autofocus info needed....

It has an aperature ring and I had set it to exactly f22 otherwise I was getting the warning.

As per the manual, It should have a button/slider to set AF.But I can't find it.

Let me add one more point: It is not a HSM lens.

Also this forum says it can AF:

Re: Autofocus info needed....

It might only be Canon fit lenses that have the AF switch.

I'm intrigued that you have an aperture ring as when I looked at the lens on the sigma web site the image appaered not to have an aperture ring.

On the mount, is there a small flat sided projection rather like a very small screwdriver tip? So small as to resemble a jeweller's screwdriver?

Re: Autofocus info needed....

I am 101% sure that it got a aperature ring.Regarding that screw,I have to inspect it closely then...I am in ofc now.will reply soon.

Anyways,I wanted to know one more thing:
with my D60 and 1.5X cropping factor, the effective focal for this lens becomes 105-450mm.

Is there any way that I can extend this focal range say from 450 to 750mm?? Extension tubes can be used for macro, but not for extending the focal, If i am not wrong.

What you want is a teleconverter

Sigma Imaging (UK) Ltd

Also made by Kenco, Nikon and others too. Check that they are compatible with your lens brfore purchase.

Re: Autofocus info needed....

Graham:

I checked the lens and it got a aperature ring. There is a slider on the lens that is used for locking the aperature at the highest f22.

But the sadest part for me was mentioned in the user manual:

"When you use the AF lens with the AF camera body, Auto Focusing is possible.Select the autofocus mode on your camera body."

Does this mean I have to use manual focusing always?

Re: Autofocus info needed....

You described the lens as new. Did you mean brand new, or new to you? If so, how old is it? I think that only very recent Sigma lenses (around two years old) will have built-in focus motors.

You might find more information on the Sigma User site.

This article is dated 31st January 2008 and would seem to announce the 70-300 now having compatiblity with Nikon D40/60 ranges. If you click on the picture of the lens to get a real size image there is no aperture ring. There is the appearance of an AF/MF selector sliding switch on the LHS.

Re: Autofocus info needed....

Nikon D60 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

"As with the D40 and D40X, the new D60 doesn't have an built-in focus drive motor which means it can auto focus only with lenses which have their own drive motor (AF-S and AF-I lenses)."

Only the Sigma HSM lenses have their own motor. Therefor you're stuck with manual focus only.

Let me post the pics of the lens that shows the aperature ring, macroswitch and all technical specs on the body. This is a new lens.I got it just 2 days back.Even in teleconvertor section of sigma webpage no reference can be found for this lens.

I think orangepeel is right

Re: Autofocus info needed....

That looks like the old model. If you bought it on the understanding you were going to be using it on the D60, you ought to be able to get a refund. Although the lens in the pictures on the Sigma web site was announced in January 2008, there will still be lots of old stock around.

Orangepeel is quite right in saying that only the HSM lenses will AF on the Nikon D40/D60, but HSM does not appear in the lens designation on the web site, or on the markings on the lens barrel.

Re: Autofocus info needed....

I talked to the dealer and he confirmed that only HSM lens will autofocus in D60.I asked for a refund and he is ready to give me a credit note

Thanks a ton to pixallo for the timely and proper guidance.

BTW Graham:

If not Sigma APO DG 70-300, what it would be in your case??? Please consider the budget.

Now I am planning to go for Nikkor VR 55-200mm or shall I go for some prime lens?? I shoot Birds,Landscape,Portraits and sometimes Moon

Re: Autofocus info needed....

The Sigma 70-300 APO with the HSM motor is an excellent choice and is available from One-Stop for 153 GBP - about the same price as the Nikkor 55-200vr which is 157.

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Lens

To cover the interests you list I think the 55-200 is not really up to it.

The Nikkor 70-300vr is also a good lens, but with vr is obviously more expensive at 380 GBP, and is bigger and heavier too.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR Lens

You could consider a used lens to keep the costs down

Re: Autofocus info needed....

I am from India. Here I inquired and found that whatever lens I had, with that price range only Nikkor 55-200VR comes. The HSM version of sigma is about US$450 and 70-300mmVR is for about 580$.These prices are for grey products.

So I preferred to go for 55-200VR.This will coverup my entire range like 18-55(KIT)-200.Also I am getting VR which i think is essential for begginers.

May be latter on i can add some prime ones in my collection, depending on my use.

I will followup with you latter on while I select some prime lens.I am planning to get 50mm 1.8.Shall I go for it or shall I take lesser than that(considering 1.5x cropping factor)?

The final decision is, of course, yours to make, but for the interests you list I still think that 200mm is inadaquate for shooting birds.

One-Stop digital has an excellent reputation and many members, myself included, have used them with no problems. In the UK their prices can sometimes be equalled, but not often.

I'm surprised to hear that the Sigma is more expensive in India, but the internet prices are pretty much the same.
