Bad News and Good News

Some of you will have seen in another thread that I went to Silverstone on Saturday for the British Grand Prix qualifying. I'll be adding some more pictures to that thread in due course, but I'm posting here to tell a cautionary tale.

After we had seen the GP3, the Porsche supercup, F1 and race 1 of the GP2 I was packing up my kit. We were sitting in typical grandstand seating - plastic seats that spring up when you stand up. I put my camera bag on my seat and my camera on my Son's seat. He was standing next to me and put his hand on my camera. Good man, I thought, so turned to prepare to swap lenses as the long lens and camera won't fit in the bag. As I did this he took his hand off and the seat flipped up and my camera took a trip onto the concrete floor.

I retrieved the camera and found that the rear LCD was smashed. The polycarbonate LCD protector was intact other than one small crack. We went home with me not feeling so good. A real spoiler to the day. The camera appeared to be working OK.

I stewed over what to do on Sunday. I thought I had 3 options. 1 Local repair, 2 send it to the Nikon repair centre at Richmond, or 3 Go to a Nikon authorised repairer. On Monday morning I telephoned Nikon who quoted a 3-4 week turn round and could not estimate the cost of repair assuming it was only the LCD that was damaged. I called Grays of Westminster (where the camera was bought) and they told me that they use Fixation for all of their repairs. Fixation was on my list as it was the nearest authorised repair centre, so I called them. They quoted a 3 DAY turn round assuming parts were in stock or still available to be ordered in, and no other damage and offered the option to quote within 2 days. This was looking a far better bet.

The next stage was after looking more carefully at the damage, it seemed that there is a cover plate over the actual LCD and it looked that this cover was cracked not the actual LCD. The impact point was on the very edge of the LCD protector near the bottom RH corner and on the very edge of the LCD. I then did some research to see if I was right and found that indeed the rear LCD on most (if not all) cameras have a cover plate over the LCD and they can be replaced quite easily without dismantling the camera. I looked to see if I could buy one but only found them in the USA or China with 2 - 4 week delivery times. The prices were from £5 to £10 delivered. The actual LCDs can be bought for around £20 too! However, this was not an option as I did not want to use the camera in case any of the fragments caused further damage.

I decided to take the camera to Fixation - my travelling costs were cheaper than insured postage - and ask if the repair was £100 + VAT or less, to carry on and repair without estimating. This would give me a quicker turn round time. I took the camera in on Tuesday at about 1.30. Fixation is a real Aladdin's cave stuffed with all sorts of goodies and is well worth a visit if you are nearby.

On Wednesday at 3.30 I got a call from Fixation. My camera was ready for collection! 26 hours is not bad in my book! Cost was £111 and included a sensor clean. They do this with all repairs in case anything finds its way onto the sensor. Not convinced it was srtictly needed for my repair as I'm sure that the work could have been done without stripping the camera, but I'm not moaning.

So here is the moral of this story. Never rely on anyone to look after your camera. This incident was my fault because I relinquished the care of my camera to someone else. I could have retained it in my possession and this would never had happened. My bad decision to put it on the seat.

ALWAYS keep the LCD protective cover on the camera. In my case it took the impact and likely saved it from more serious damage and cosmetic damage.

If you are unfortunate and have something like this happen to you, it is not the end of the world. If spares are available I think that this work could be done by any competent repairer. If you are useful with your hands this is something that could be done on a DIY basis provided you can get the parts. Older cameras might prove difficult to get parts for. I've ordered the LCD cover plates for both my D700 and D300 and in the event that it happens again I'd definitely have a go at a DIY repair. I may never need these parts, but if I do they will be instantly available and more importantly I will have them in the event of the spares supply drying up.

Happy you swam out of the deep end, Hope your boy feels better to. I ran over my bike bag with the rear wheel of my little car. Lucky it just nicked the corner and the stiff plastic sides deflected some wieght. The UV cover cracked, camera and lenses 24-105L still work.

GRAHAM, SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR CAMERA ACCIDENT, BUT VERY PLEASED TO HEAR IT WAS FIXABLE AND NOT TO EXPENSIVE.

I THINK IT IS ALWAYS A WISE THING TO HAVE LCD COVERS AND PROTECTIVE FILTERS AND LENS HOODS ON LENSES

Some time ago I was climbing a stone wall, my camera swung around and I put a slight cosmetic scratch on the LCD and ever since then I've used a screen protector

Re: Bad News and Good News

A bit of a nail-biting experience, Graham. Good it all worked out without too much expense, and a good brownie point for Fixation getting it back so quickly. That's what you like to hear about repair companies - your kit is back in your hands without losing the use of it for any longer than absolutely necessary. Pity Nikon UK couldn't match that !

I never realised that the LCD 'screen' at the back of the camera is in fact only a cover over the LCD itself - I checked out the videos, and was surprised, specially as Nikon supply a removable protection cover that is already fitted to the camera when you buy it.

I leave my covers on. They get scratched and covered in fingermarks, no matter how careful I am, and can easily be rejuvenated with some yacht perspex window polish (removes scratches completely, and makes the cover look like new). The screen underneath remains in pristine state, which I can view whenever lighting conditions demand.

Re: Bad News and Good News

Although the original LCD cover still fitted OK I replaced it as it was cracked and weakened. New one was only £7. Kept the old one now as a spare for any possible emergency use.

The camera now is in pristine condition without a scratch on it anywhere to tell a tale.

You are right Shane - But I could have been happier if my Son had not taken his hand off the camera (and a little bit richer).

Re: Bad News and Good News

One of my huge fears about my D800 is dropping it. I bought the extended coverage plan for 3 years which is up december 2015. Supposedly I could destroy the camera and get a new one if it was unrepairable.

I'm not normally a big believer in buying the extended warranty but when dealing with a purchase that was such a high percentage of my annual income.. well I said yes..

Re: Bad News and Good News

Sorry to hear that, but glad the repair was not too nasty.
A few years ago at a bike race, I shoved my kit back in the bag after the race & didn't zip it up. Being kind when I got home, Andy came out to help me get the kit in & my 70-200mm fell out of the bag and onto the kepb. Ouch But sent off to H Lehmann Ltd and back as good as new, although left me about £250 poorer. Been very careful with zips ever since

I actually remember that happening. Considering taking my 80-200 f2.8 in for a service as the focus occasionally sticks.

Re: Bad News and Good News

I had my 70-200 on my 7D, put it in my backpack and swung the pack up - not zipped it up and camera fell out onto the tarmac. Luckily not far and upside down so flash shoe took the impact which has been slightly bent ever since but everything works fine (some might say it's improved my picture taking!). I've also managed to drop my 300mm out the back of the pack (but onto grass) at some busy horse trials and walked off. Someone came rushing after me to return it!
