Blackrapid RS-5 Cargo strap

I've been wanting a different strap than what came with my camera, not because it doesn't work well but because I dislike being a walking advertisement for muggers, saying "You can steal a $3000 camera from me..."

This may be self consciousness but I always feel when I am standing around with a camera strap around my neck and my dSLR that I look like a tourist or some guy with an expensive camera

I've taken about a year to get around to this. In the mean tie I usually wore my camera strap inside out.. so I wasn't showing off what I own.. But I finally got off the fence and ordered a strap last week. The Blackrapid RS-5 Cargo..

It took a little bit of a learning curve to figure it out. The instructions weren't the best. Just an 8 or 9 panel business card foldout showing basic use through drawings. But once I worked through things on my own for 15 minutes I was set.

For starters, it felt really disconcerting to hang the camera by it's tripod screw hole off the strap - but in several day's use it hasn't come loose where falling was a danger.

The first pocket is advertised as being for your cell phone. Well MAYBE if you have a candy bar phone. Not an iPhone.. I've taken to putting business cards in it.

The inner pockets has a zipper, and would be really good for holding CF/SD cards and camera batteries.. Maybe some lens cleaning cloths or a small toolkit..

The strap body itself is made out of ballistic nylon. The pockets are held closed with magnets. Which work quite well.

It is nice being able to walk around without having a camera bouncing on my chest. It hangs right at my waist and it is quick to bring up for a shot..

Potential down side is if you switch from tripod to handheld regularly it could get old reinstalling the lug that you connect the strap to.

It also would be easy to forget it's there and slam your camera into a doorway as you walk through. I've taken to keeping my hand on my camera as I go through doors just to be sure and foster the muscle memory to do so..

I've also noticed it's easy to get the strap twisted when picking it up and putting the camera strap on. But the hook swivel makes it easy to undo that. It's also easy to put on backwards if you don't pay attention to the lettering on the strap.

Several people gave it less than great rating because they said it always slides around to their back when they pull the camera up to shoot. Well there are clips on each side of the camera hook which limit motion. If you don't set the one to the left of the hook, I found that to be the case, where the strap slides around my shoulder. Once I set that to where the camera would be if I raised it to my face it stopped. The clip to the right of the hook controls where the camera stops when you put it down.

It is a little pricey. I paid $71 for it with Amazon Prime delivery. I think that price is pretty insignificant compared to the function and use one should expect to get out of this strap, though.

As of right now I'm pretty happy with the purchase and I'd buy one again if this one gets lost/damaged.

Re: Blackrapid RS-5 Cargo strap

Nice review Loyd. I might be tempted to move it into the Review Section.

Got to say that I also use this style of strap. However, being a cheapskate I got the e-bay copy. You might want to investigate these for your other cameras

Only difference for me is that because I have Manfrotto RC2 quick release plates on all of my cameras and my 80-200 lens, the carabina on the strap fits onto the D ring on the QR plate so connecting and disconnecting the strap is a doddle.

Here is my review:

Re: Blackrapid RS-5 Cargo strap

My Camera Strap advertises Canon and while a mugger is always a possibility, it is fairly unlikely anywhere I would go. I was more concerned about my Manfrotto Tripod. I would not leave my camera anywhere so it is less likely to be stolen. However, I often put my tripod bag down and it could be stolen when I am distracted. I use a Jessops bag for my tripod on the basis that no one would steal a Jessops tripod!

Re: Blackrapid RS-5 Cargo strap

Slightly off topic but I bought two camera straps, one with a stretch neoprene section which I was told would make the slr easier to carry, which it did, and one with a steel security wire in it which I thought was a good idea at the time. On reflection I considered whether I would rather loose the camera or have my neck cut off by a very strong steel wire if someone decided to grab my camera. Needless to say I don't use the strap with the steel wire in it, money will buy a new camera but it won't buy a new head

Re: Blackrapid RS-5 Cargo strap

We too use the knockoff fleabay versions (I keep mine attached to the 500) and, as someone using webbing in the manufacture of dog collars and headcollars, I'm confused as to why the genuine article is so expensive - it certainly isn't in the cost of the materials!

For anyone interested, here's the Facebook page (I know, I know I hate FB too but in a dog's world dominated by FB......)
Merry Puppins

And for those who haven't got around to using FB (though it's an open page so anyone can access it), here's the main pic I use of my boy wearing his headcollar

Re: Blackrapid RS-5 Cargo strap

I've got a black rapid strap as well, the one designed for a ladies shape I find it excellent. No problem with the tripod either, the base for my 3 legged thing tripod stays on the camera & the screw that holds that in is designed to clip onto the black rapid, so just unclip & fix to the tripod at any time. Simples

Nice headcollar Mark. I used to use them when the whippets were puppies, it stopped them pulling really well.

Re: Blackrapid RS-5 Cargo strap

I too have a Black Rapid Strap - a small pocket one- works really well and find it really helps distribute the weight especially when carrying the 300mm around.
