Buying a 70-200 2.8 and need help on a nice monopod

First time posting on here. Like I said in the title, I'm planning on purchasing a canon 70-200 2.8 lens in the next few days for shooting alot of sports pictures. Most commonly I will be shooting Track and Field. I was wondering what would be one of the best tripods to purchase along with the lens? I need something preferably light weight and somewhat nicer quality. I don't want something cheap, but don't necessarily need something super high quality. I'll be using the lens on a 40D. Thanks

Tony

Personally, I just rest my gear on a monopod so it's just a cheap and cheerful Hama (chosen for the QR plate used on my tripod) but there're those that lean on their monopods so need something a bit stronger!

I mainly use a Manfrotto 682. Nice and strong monopod and the fold out legs make for a handy flash pod, or at a push tripod.

I've got a Velbon UP4000 - only £23 in Jessop's, so probably cheaper on the web.

I use a monopod for Rugby matches, but for cycling and the running shots I've taken I always hand hold so that I can move around more quickly and get different angles.

Whipspeed, I have seen your stunning cycling images. did not think they would be hand held, you are one classy act, what speed do you shoot at and do you have an IS lens.

Re: Buying a 70-200 2.8 and need help on a nice monopod

Thanks Dan, I shoot anywhere from 1/80 upwards, depending on the conditions on the day. Don't use IS lens, just 70-200 f2.8 for the time trialling and 24-105 f4 for the road racing. Tripod makes it hard to move about, although dave got some great multiple images on Sunday, using a wide angle and tripod, taking images as the rider went past, have a look in the sharing gallery.

I always handhold the Canon 70-200 IS 2.8 and have never used a monopod with this lens.
