Canon 100-400 F4/5.6 L is usm lens

I recently sold my lens on after 18mnths from new. The purchaser is now telling me that he is having difficulty getting it to auto focuse and there is a 'flicker' when he presses the shutter. I have answered him with advice to check contacts/min. focus switch and that IS does come in a bit hard perhaps. He is going to take it to a repair shop for examination and to get an idea of where we go from here but I wonder has any one any comments or experienced similar problems? I might add that I have never had a problem with it and have taken some great shots with it. I only sold it on as I have settled on a nice new 70-200 f2.8L is usm with a mk3 2x extender - which is faster focusing and a little lighter to lug around the Somerset levels in order to get the same reach with my 5D
mk2.

Was it sold as seen or did you offer any recourse in the event of a fault?

The thing is you dont know what he has done with it since you sold it. He could have dropped it in a river, off a cliff, stood on it, anything. From a private seller it must do what its supposed to do when you sell it. Unless you offered to guarantee it, he has no claims on you......unless he bought it twenty minutes ago!

Could be that the body he is using does not have as good AF as yours, as said, you have no means of knowing if he has damaged it, and with a private sale there is no liability to you.

Maybe the flicker when he releases the shutter is indicative of a fault with his camera. He could try the lens on a different body - yours if you live close enough - as then you will know if the fault is with the lens or the body. You can also check it for damage, but in any case, you have no liability unless you gave a warranty.

Re: Canon 100-400 F4/5.6 L is usm lens

Does sound like the IS - I get this very occasionally with my Sigma 150-500mm OS and Sigma describe it is 'normal'. Never heard of it with any IS mechanism but it maybe not that serious.

As stated by everyone else, unless you specifically mentioned that you'd warranty the lens, there's really no legal liability but only you (and buyer) can decide whether there's a moral issue! Personally, if I sold a lens in good faith, it then went wrong and I determined that the buyer was not trying to pull a fast one, I might entertain the idea of meeting some of the costs of any repair

Re: Canon 100-400 F4/5.6 L is usm lens

I have a small fault with my 100-400 as well in that the switch to short focusing doesn't work so the lens' shortest focusing distance is a good ten feet but then I rarely use it for anything that close anyway so it isn't an issue. I have thought about sending it in for a service and probably will eventually.

Unless the fault was pre-existent when you sold it to him AND he discovered this fault on first examination, he has no come back on you at all. As others have said, you have no idea what the guy has done with it and private sales don't come with guarantees unless you gave him a warranty in writing (can't understand why you would have done that!) If there is a fault, I'm afraid that is down to the other guy to get sorted unless he can show that this fault was there when he bought it.

Cheers,
Rob
