Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L or Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 OS

I have been shopping around for a new zoom lens and I'm stuck between the Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L & Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 OS. There is the obvious price difference but what else separates these lenses?
I currently own the Canon 50mm F1.8, 80mm F1.8,Sigma 15-30mm F3.5 & Sigma 70-300mm f/4. I would like to get into something that is sharper at the longer range.
Thanks for your advice!

Hi, and welcome to Pixalo. I have the 100-400 but not used the Sigma so will refrain from comparing. The Canon is excellent in good light but if less than good light you need to push the ISO. I only know one member who has/had both and he should be along soon

The canon 100-400mm was the first lens I bought. It was just released and to this day my most used lens. I feel it is very sharp at f/5.6 400mm and makes it a fast telephoto lens.

I have the Sigma 150-500mm an I am really impressed with it.

I am however a Nikon user so can't comment on the Canon lens.

I did however chose the Sigma over the comparable Nikon lens. The equivalent Nikon was around £1,100 so the Sigma's price is superb. To be fair though I chose it because of the great reviews and recommendations.

I use both the Canon and the Sigma and prefer the Sigma!

I actually like the Canon's 'pump action' zoom as it makes possible zoom and manual focus but I'm less impressed with it's IS and restriction to 400mm. A better OS, an extra 100mm and a sensible lens strap make the Sigma much more attractive for me - so I don't mind (too much!) the noisy OS and not put off by really needing to shoot at f/8 at the widest (and yes, I'd agree that the Canon's not too bad @ f/5.6)

All my recent(ish) shots are with the Sigma (you have to go back a fair bit to find Canon shots) - but my most recent images are with my "new" Sigma 500mm f/4.5 (which, as can be seen, is good wide open!). I'm slowly going prime with my lenses.......

Thanks for the feedback. I will be taking a look at a gently used Sigma 150-500mm on Thursday.

Are you willing to consider a prime lens over the telephotos? For me I changed my 100-400 for a 300/4 prime. I can add on a 1.4TC to get to 420mm and still get better quality pics than I ever got with my 100-400 at the long end. For me, IQ was more important than a zoom, as I had the 70-200 if I needed it.
