Canon 200 /400 + extender

I see the Canon 200 / 400 with built in extender is now in the ads in magazines, at £12000+ !! Think I will give it a miss, unless the lottery comes up.
It seems any new EF L lenses are getting crazy prices these days, cant be still because of the Tsunami surely.

Re: Canon 200 /400 + extender

Seems the prices of everything I want these days exceeds what I pay for cars.. (the prices of my last several cars put together as a matter of fact...)

I've been semi drooling over Nikon's 800mm F5.6 and I just know I'll never be able to do it..

If I suddenly had the money to pay for one, I'd probably pay for a couple house remodeling jobs instead of spending it all on a lens. But with a lottery win, well then yes I'd probably spend a lot of money on glass..

Andy Rouse has a great write up on the lens and some terrific wildlife shots on his web site he has been using it since last September link can be found on WEX site, well worth a read. You might be impressed enough to go out and get a mortage on the house.

Re: Canon 200 /400 + extender

I haven't been able to figure this lens out as to what i could use it for. I could not buy it anyways. I would buy a quarts lens. But things are tight, they are always tight. It's like I have the money in my hands one moment, and I need to spend it somewhere else. So a lens that makes no sense for me

Re: Canon 200 /400 + extender

I agree Boofers, I cant see the reason for it ,when I needed a longer reach I got a C size sensor camera to use with my 100 / 400 L, this in effect gives me a max reach of 640mm f 5.6 ! If I need anything bigger then I am too far away and would move closer.

Re: Canon 200 /400 + extender

Oh, I could so use this lens! Judging from comments on it, super sharp, and with a dedicated TC it doesn't suffer the usual quality drop of using a TC, teamed with an excellent IS

To compare it with the overrated 100-400 is just so wrong (don't forget it is f/5.6 @ 400 - a whole stop less) but then I've never got on with it, preferring the Sigma 150-500. I like the Canon's build (presumably the reason for being designated an L) and the push/pull zoom is interesting but the IS is old and inferior whilst the IQ is good but not great

Having said that, of course the old rule of exponential pricing holds true: to get a 10% increase in IQ you've got to pay twice as much and for a 20% increase 4 times as much

Re: Canon 200 /400 + extender

like everything someone will have a use for it, just cos we dont doesnt mean its useless, Obviously at the price it is being aimed at Pros and specialised pros at that, its certainly not a walkabout lens. I havent even looked at it as i have no need of it, so havent let the price put me off.
For longer shots i have the lens i need, for portraiture i have the lens i need, and for landscape i have the lens i need..... in fact im pretty much there with lenses anything i buy now is an extra not a need.

Re: Canon 200 /400 + extender

As Colin said, Andy Rouse uses this lens on a 1Dx (?) and uses it mainly for wildlife shots. I have been lucky to go on 2 of his 'Owl' days where he was using it. A great lens/ camera combination and fast. I like Canon's idea of putting a 1.4 extender switch in the lens so with a flick the 200-400 becomes a 280-560mm on a full frame camera. A great idea, effectively a 200-560 lens.
