canon 28-135 IS anygood?
I have just sold a canon 28-105 usm which was very soft at any thing other than f8-11. i want to replace the lens with something of similar range but the 24-105L is a bit out of range at the mo. does anybody have any experience good or bad with the 28-135 IS. I will be using it on a 20D.
Thanks |

300-350 ish. i have been considering the sigma 24-70 f2.8 to complement my sigma70-200, but the image stabiliser thingy sounds pretty good.

Here's a review of the Canon 28-135:
http://photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/...6_is/index.htm And here's a review of the 28-105 you just sold for comparison: http://photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/...3545/index.htm If you look at the resolution figures, you'll see that both lenses are pretty similar for sharpness, and seeing as that's the reason you gave for selling the 28-105 I'd be wary if I were you. It might be worth spending a couple of months saving your pennies and going for something a bit dearer. |

I used to have a 28-135IS and it was very soft 28-44mm under F8. Sharpness improved a little past that but it was nothing amazing.

Ita a good reasonable price walkabout lens especially at F7-9
But if you can afford it, the new 24-105 F4 L is brilliant on a 20D my percentage of keepers has gone up by quite a large margin so it was definateley worth the extra money.

Not quite the range but have a look at the Tamron 28-75 f2.8. I've just added a review in the Review section. Cracking lens IMHO. I also have a 28-135IS and whilst its a pretty good walkabout lens it is soft under f8 IME although the IS is excellent.

Re: canon 28-135 IS anygood?
I have this lens up for sale at the moment, on a few other boards. I'll get it up here in a bit, or you can PM me if interested.
I'm not technically minded, but I quite like the lens. The reason I'm getting rid of it is because 28mm was not wide enough for me. So I switched to the 17-85mm IS. Another reason was because when I upgraded from the 300D to the 20D, I sold the 18-55mm kit lens along with the 300D, so I needed another lens to cover the wide end. |

Hi Torpedeo
Seems you have some good & bad experiences of some lenses there. If you could share that information on the Equipment reviews page that will be extremely helpful for other members. Any problems listing your lens for sale in the classified, please let me know. |

Re: canon 28-135 IS anygood?
It's a very popular and well rated lens is the Tamron and quite rightly so too. I also have a copy of this lens in my bag, I love the small size and dependable quality plus f2.8 across the full range.

Re: canon 28-135 IS anygood?
take a look at Camera Database and Museum at PBase.com
i love this site, i think it has a vast database and lots of photographic examples of equipment. take a look at some examples of 28-135 and the 24-105L and have a compare, although these examples aren't the be and end all, you can get a basic idea of sharpness etc had a go with a friends 28-135 IS and to be honest didn't blow me away, maybe save for the L as your mind will be at rest knowing you can't buy better in that focal range. ps just had a quick look at the photos taken with my friends 28-135 and they are not too bad to be fair one stop-digital.com have the 24-105 for £709, and 28-135 for £307 |

Re: canon 28-135 IS anygood?
I had a 28-135 IS a few years back - not a bad performer considering its price. It certainly wasn't overly soft - infact with a bit of subtle PP you could get some lovely rich, sharp images from it. It definitely performed better at its wide end though.
At the time there weren't any other mid range zooms with IS available; now there's the 24-105 L which seems far superior so I know where I'd put my money if I was buying again. The L does pop up second hand now and again - i've seen 3 go recently for £500something... so if you can afford it... |
